Initial Text

Towards the back of the club, you find the source of all this music. A young woman works among the electronics, presumably DJing.

And with pop music playing:
You'll have to shout if she's going to hear you over the repetitive beat and catchy lyrics.

And with spooky music playing:
You'll have to shout if she's going to hear you over the crowd's eerie whispering.

And with punk music playing:
You'll have to shout if she's going to hear you over the brain-meltingly intense punk rock.

And with metal music playing:
You'll have to shout if she's going to hear you over the metal howling from her speakers.

And with festive music playing:
You'll have to shout if she's going to hear you over these carols.

Hello!

It's hard to hold a conversation over the thumping music, but she shouts down an explanation of her job. "I control all the music from up here! Unless you request something it's going to be pop trash!"

"Oh, I've got this too!" She flips a switch, causing a disco ball to glitter over the dance floor.

"But it's really strong so it keeps blinding people!" As though on cue a dancer stumbles into several others, bringing the crowd to a standstill.

She flips the switch and turns the light back off.

(unlocks "Give us the disco ball!" action)

Or if the ball is down

It's hard to hold a conversation over the thumping music, but she shouts down an explanation of her job. "I control all the music from up here! Unless you request something it's going to be pop trash!"

"Oh, I've got this too!" She flips a switch, causing the disco ball above the dance floor to fall dark.

A few dancers boo and others cheer. She pauses for a beat then flips the switch back, reversing their reactions.

I have a request!

She smiles down at you and shouts over the music. "Sure! That's my job! What do you want to hear?"

Something harsh

She taps into the main speakers so everyone can hear her. "Alright, by special request, let's hear some… Brain Staples!"

The music abruptly changes to brain-meltingly intense punk rock.

Something popular

She shouts down to you. "Really? Is that really what you want?"

She sighs visibly and taps some commands into her console. A moment later a pop tune begins pounding out of the speakers.

Something spooky

She shrugs visibly and her voice echoes out from the speakers. "Alright, everybody! By special request… put on your horn-rimmed glasses and talk about retro-ironic node poems… it's Emerald Gift!"

You hear a few cheers from the edges of the dancefloor. Eerie music fills the club with dark swells, crystalline ornamentation, and whispered vocals.

Something heavy

She frowns a little and shouts down at you. With all these speakers, it''s unlikely anyone else can hear. "Alright, but none of that garage band frat garbage! You want heavy, you get heavy!"

She flips her microphone back on with a flourish. "By special request, we have a suborbital delivery from the frozen wastes of Eurasia! I hope you like consonants, because it's time for some real metal!"

Most of the usual crowd spills on to the dancefloor, followed by a few guys who look like they just came from the gym by way of an overpriced clothing store.

Something festive (During Christmas)

She laughs, although it's inaudible over the music, then pauses to stare at you.

"Oh! You're serious!" she begins flipping through some sort of menu on the panels in front of her, narrating loudly for your benefit.

"Heard it! Heard it! Viral crap! Retro crap! Heard it! Ah, here we go!"

Ancient carols begin piping through the club, much to the confusion of the dancers. (And, in 2016) One student in the back gives you a thumbs-up, so at least you're not alone.

Whatever you want

If anything but Brain Staples is playing:

She taps into the main speakers so everyone can hear her. "Alright, by special request, let's hear some… Brain Staples!"

The music abruptly changes to brain-meltingly intense punk rock.

Or, if Brain Staples is already playing:

She shrugs visibly and her voice echoes out from the speakers. "Alright, everybody! By special request… put on your horn-rimmed glasses and talk about retro-ironic node poems… it's Emerald Gift!"

You hear a few cheers from the edges of the dancefloor. Eerie music fills the club with dark swells, crystalline ornamentation, and whispered vocals.

Give us the disco ball!

She nods down at you and shouts herself hoarse over the music. "Alright! But this amount of awesome may cause retinal searing, thinking you can dance, or spontaneous pregnancy!"

She flips a switch and brilliant lights begin reflecting over the dance floor. You half expect them to cut down dancers like science fiction lasers, but they're not quite that intense.

(unlocks Blinded By The Light noncombat and Dazzling Cloud combat for the day)

Turn off the disco ball!

She nods down and flips a switch. The lights die back down.

(Locks Blinded By The Light noncombat and Dazzling Cloud combat)

Just watch

You watch the DJ for a while. She seems to be having a good time selecting and mixing tracks.

The crowd also seems to love having a live DJ, so it feeds back and forth.

Or with pop music set

You watch the DJ for a while. It looks like she's enjoying herself, even though the subject matter isn't very interesting.

She frowns every time she picks up the request list, though.

Before December 26, 2014, the second intro paragraph was always:

The music here is deafening, so if you want her to hear you, you'll have to shout.
