The bum's an interesting idea. The most obvious strategy would be to get high, of course - has anyone tried that?

Nah, I bugged Kinak about it too after getting my butt handed to me repeatedly. The puzzle is for fighting, although he didn't mention specifically how it relates. I might be trying something else, as in trying to figure out what the bum is doing there, but we'll see next lap.

If anybody has figured out that puzzle yet, they're not saying anything. I'm curious if it's clued in-game, or if it's just something you have to reset and try different things until you hit on it. The quest entry says something about either having to think outside the box or pack a lot of heat for that fight. I assume the thinking out of the box bit refers to doing an end run around the fight via Hawk. Maybe I'll try a fire attack next time …

Oh, sorry, I meant "tricks" as "using the puzzle I mentioned to make the fight easier." If you lost on the last guard in the normal version the post-puzzle version wouldn't have given you a problem.

Cheers!
Kinak

Slight misunderstanding there, I was using all those effects. Crappy equipment, admittedly, but I would have thought they would still give me easily a big enough advantage, as opposed to making the fight such a close call.

If you got that far in the Shard battle without resorting to tricks, you'll do fine with them.

It's sort of like Sabre. If you're anywhere close with Crushed Perceptions, you'll do great if you managed to avoid the worst.

Cheers!
Kinak

I was surprised at how hard Shard was just now… even with No Pain, Whiskey Drunk, Happy Hour, and Bone Spikes, and the new targeting system that let me take him out first, the last guard managed to beat me back. I thought I was at about the right 'level' to fight him too… I guess I'll have to find out exactly how that puzzle works.

Sabre I could definitely have defeated if I hadn't been an idiot and charged in with 14 hit points. But then, I also mysteriously avoided getting Crushing Perceptions. I'll have to figure out if that's just a matter of Willpower or what…

Okay, made the first round of changes. Shard (David's guard) has had a bit of a puzzle added to make the fight easier. Sabre (Dr. Amundsen's guard) has been buffed a bit, mostly centering on Crushing Perceptions, which is now pretty vicious. Also tweaked their stats and Technique selection some.

Also changed the quest a bit, centering around the asylum key. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out, but lets people spend a bit more time in the asylum.

Any other feedback? Definitely post it. I'm not a fan of treating anything as set in stone.

Cheers!
Kinak

I'm at 7 8 8 8 stats, 8 8 10 8 with equipment. I probably gained a couple stats since I tried this, but not many.

I tried to rescue David (and Lo) first and failed miserably (I feel guilty about that now :(). I killed one of the henchmen the first round and was slaughtered on the second. Moving on to the boiler room, I found it much easier. I did not open the chanting door, as I remembered where that led, but everyone else I encountered was easy as pie (sorcerors are damaging but die fast, so it's managable). When it came to rescuing Dr. Amundsen I had little trouble dispatching her captor even with Crushed Perceptions active.

I would say the disparity in difficulty between the two boss fights is too great. I'd say you should make rescuing David a bit easier and rescuing Sif a bit harder. I really like the boiler room in general, although the asylum journal should do something. If it has any use, I haven't found it.

So, I went through and increased the difficulty of the Third Eye Thugs and the two bosses. The XP and special drops from the two bosses have improved some too.

The genesis of this is because the difficulty was moving up a tiny bit into the University quest, then jumping to the Slags. The Third Eye were actually originally harder, but were extremely difficult due to a bug which is now fixed. This will hopefully just bring them back into line.

So, what I'm wondering is how the new difficulty feels. It should be a hard fight to rescue Dr. Amundsen, but not require too much advanced preparation if you can avoid the new challenge. Rescuing David should be harder, but possible without grinding up stats and skills too much. The thugs should be around the level of the Fang enforcers in the sewers and, like them, extremely difficult in groups.

Cheers!
Kinak
