I kept count of my kills. Possibly useful to know the exact number of dead till the boss for when you want to run away to make sure you get the Eavesdrop encounter.

25 seems a very likely estimate. Didn't get the burning encounter this run. Does it say how many you kill? If not, I'll try to find out next run.
It does say how many, and it's listed on this page. (burning kills 4). Since both you and I got 26, I set it to that, but we can change that if something comes up. Don't remember how many my last turn killed

Idly counted them as I went through the hideout, then confirmed it with Al's logger script.
I got to 24, then had a coffee encounter bringing it up to 29. So I guess you can get over 26 with the choice encounters, and 26 is a minimum? This implies that it could actually be 25, I suppose.

I'm about 90% sure that I went through it last run at exactly 25 - a single combat encounter was the last one so I know it worked out exactly. Looks like you can push it over 25 though if your last encounter has more people than that in it. I'll double check next run.
Based on my results from the Cave Edge encounter, it looks like you have to penetrate several layers of defense to get to the boss. So far I've found distinct messages for near the entrance, in the area illuminated by the lights, and near their ramshackle buildings. I have been avoiding obvious combat choices to see what happens if you try to be sneaky. It'd also be interesting to see if you can skill just shoot your way in by killing 25 guards.
Now that I've hit what I take to be all of the choice encounters at least once, I'm burning body to see what kind of special etheric encounters there are. Thanks to crappy smuggler food and not finding red flakes, that''ll have to wait until after rollover, though.
What I tried to do was find a hole in the defenses, then equip my Zalian defense tool for +3 Stealth Power and try to sneak quietly. I did get caught doing that once, but the other times it worked. I'm not sure whether that much bonus just gives you a good percentage chance of sneaking past or if there's some other factor at work.
It sure looks like the way to make progress is to get past the Cave Edge encounter five times (entrance, lighted area, edge of the buildings, among the buildings, thick of the settlement). But I was deliberately trying to test getting in sneakily, so I didn't try just killing guards. Presumably that'd work as well but I'm not sure how.
