Now that skills are available in Oldtown, I've tried the following things:

• Burning Vision
• Being etheric
• Studious Nature
• Focused Perception
• Parasitic Vine
• Using up to 10 in a row
• Using one after getting a linguistics result from a Post Archive

Edit: I've now done all of the above (except for the Post Archive thing) after getting the 'that way lies madness' result. I've also tried using one with an active OJ charge.

I also went back into the misty office and tried various interactions with the workers there, but none of them seem to have changed with the new information.

So, I forgot to save the exact message I got the first time using these, but it indicated that I still needed to use the Survey of Modern Poetry for more information. So I did that, got the result for identifying the text as similar to node poems. I then used another, and got this result which is a slight change from previous messaging:

You go over the papers. The writing isn't in a language you know… it doesn't even really resemble any languages you've seen. Even comparison to the runes on that puzzle doesn't shed any light on the situation.

Something about it seems oddly similar to the map, however.

I've tried using a yellowing map and ancient notes, but no obvious changes on either of those, and they don't seem to have changed what I get here.

Getting the same results as Crypto. No change using one with Lotus Map and Fae Sight active. Nothing new sober with Ardent Investigator either.

The hint about being similar to the map is sort of double-edged sword. On one hand it could be hinting that we need to get a mysterious language database (since other map-related attempts haven't borne fruit). If that doesn't pan out, though, my worry is that maybe it's cluing that the blotted document skill is an alternative skill from the database and is mutex with Lotus Map.

Just randomly using it again, and got another one of the previously found messages with the bit about the map appended:

Since it still mentions the language database in the first part of the message, I suppose it's probably not helpful for the second part.

On a fresh run, having not interacted with the blotted document, or the ancient notes, yellowing map or mysterious language database, after comparing to the Survey of Modern Poetry I just get:

You're fairly sure the text is procedurally-generated, so it's probably best not to worry about it too much. That way lies madness.

So it looks like there's a step to unlocking the "Something about it seems oddly similar to the map, however." result, but not a change in the existing messaging that provides a clue.

Edit: Also, using just a yellowing map, without any of the other work toward the Lotus Map unlock, doesn't seem to have caused anything to change.

No special message for using these after having just taken mysterious ash (which is derived from the ancient notes/yellowing map). I just got the default result from the ash, though, if it matters.

Edit: A couple of posts up I was worrying about whether maybe whatever skill comes from these is mutex with Lotus Map. I finally broke down and asked Kinak if I could shake a skill out of this if I'm clever even if I already have LM and he says:

Have no fear, not all hope is lost.

Edit: Went through a whole duration of Juryrigged Antenna with Midgard filtering hacking high-altitude drones and did not get anything new. Not a satisfying sample size, but probably not like the map in this respect.

Edit: Nothing for using one with Burning Vision, Parasitic Vine and Vine Husk active, and a misty gem equipped. (The plants live in the Misty Offices, so maybe they like mist?) Also no go with the same setup after having checked out the mysterious drone signature (which is referred to in some mysterious ash results).

Edit: The Lotus Map effect gives +chance of Etheric encounters, but using these with "supremely increased" chance does nothing special.
