Combat data. I have been either rather unlucky or he seems to have relatively low Perception.

Gatling guard sometimes drops 2-3 paper mache upon a kill inside of the vault. Regular heavy guards do not. Possibly as a result of damaging the shelves?

The combat encounter:

Guards swarm over you like flies on Southside garbage bins. Although they're heavily armored, they seem a little overly cautious about damaging the archives.

seems to be hinting that something odd is going on there. May be related.

EDIT: This encounter did not show up from running away or losing, from break room charge in or wander in.

This is small sample size but:
3/3 times — the single "electronic whirr" gatling guard gave 3 paper mache.
0/4 times — the "vault is swarming with guards" gatling guard gave paper mache.

Killing the lone gatling guard with stealth in one round still only gives paper mache.
