Well, personally, I used the old chart for seeing what hadn't been tested yet. That's why removing 'nonviable' rows might be a bad idea, since each time a new armory-craftable is introduced we'd have to remember to add blank boxes everywhere before people start assuming they've been tested. Unfortunately, keeping the nonviable rows in there is unwieldy and labor-intensive, a problem I think can be partially ameliorated by the 'long ass box' idea.
For non-spaders, there are times when you have a daunting # of armory craftables (particularly if you buy a torch & supplies for the first time), and you don't want to waste all your polysteel or unlined pants before you can see what the possibilities are. It essentially serves the same purpose as the sword hilt example ("what can I make with this?"), but when you want to know what you can make with this, that, the other, and all their girlfriend's dogs. Or something.
