No Coatless Bum?

I had the choice encounter Burning Barrel and I chose to "Charge the Bums."

Now, I only get the choice encounter Abandoned Barrel, which I understand. I also only chose "Help the Homeless" during every Pick A Side encounter. I have yet to see the Coatless Homeless encounter.

Does that mean once you attack the bums at the Burning Barrel you are only allowed to complete the quest on the Ganger's side?

I got the eclipse to finish the quest and get Lo as a contact without taking a side by killing the insane slasher or whatever the vigilante combat is (easier option might be scavange, but the few times I tried did not result in eclipse). I do not have carlos as a contact, and I killed the golden glove so I'm not sure how that affects things. I may be locked out of the skills, but I'm hoping to find something new.

After adventuring a bit it seems the park is still in before quest form, even though I've moved on to the docks quest, we'll see how long this lasts.

Finished waterfront quest, now the park is afterquest, i wonder if i can get access to the lab without hel…

Interesting stuff! I wonder if you have found a way of completing the quest that Kinak didn't anticipate, or if you're really on to something.

What do you mean you killed the Golden Glove? Did you get some kind of encounter that's not on the wiki, or did you "Charge them" at the Burning Barrel?

It's definitely not working as intended; the park should have switched to post-quest mode on completing the quest.

The fact that it did swap on completing the docks quest implies that the main quest chain zone opening is actually controlled by a single variable, possibly an integer where the southside park is after-quest if the integer is greater than or equal to one. So the dockside sewers would show the same behavior if you managed to keep it from being set, as would the asylum and the place David is imprisoned in, and possibly the top of the Abandoned Buildings. However, The Charnal House and The Quad are not on that variable, unless it's got distinct states for any point past where they unlock on the quest tree. I wonder how that would interact with encounters triggered after quests.

By killing him I mean charged the barrel and fought who I assume to be him, but thats just my perception I guess. Also, the comp sci things are interesting.

Confirmation from Kinak that this method was intentional :
I did include that on purpose, but always knew it might end up causing problems. Thanks for letting me know you found it :)

Do we know what determines when Carlos shows up? Defitan wrote some info back in 2012 on the fang points page that scattering the bums helps, but I don't think does help. Last run, I had to help the gangers 6 times. This run I helped the gangers 3 times. I ran away from all combats (both were pacifist runs). I didn't interact with the burning barrel at all. I had the exact same equipment and stats. Why is this so much faster this time? Does the "this is our turf" combat give you a penalty somehow?

Also - Abduction and Evil Eye in the Park encounters are listed on the Southside Park (before quest) page, but I haven't seen either of those before completing Southside Park quest. Do they ever show up before finishing Docks quest?
