Well, I thought I'd ask some questions about this quest, since I'm pretty sure I've taken a different path that doesn't even let me access the ship at all. When I go to visit the waterlogged corpse at the oil slick, it immediately attacks me. In fact, my waterlogged friend seems to be popping up and attacking me in a number of zones, like the docks, sewers and damaged buildings (if I'm Etheric at the time.)

I'm guessing this is because I accepted the skill "Servant of the Mask" from a creepy masked guy I met. At the time I didn't know it was related to this quest, although maybe I missed something in reading the choice adv text. Or maybe I'm wrong about it being connected. Anybody have any thoughts/suppositions?

It's most certainly connected, as is everything on the Ghost Ship - which is where you met the creepy masked guy, correct?

If you met him in a different area, that was due to a bug Kinak fixed a while ago. If you send him a message saying you were caught by the bug, he'll wipe that skill and let you do the quest properly.

Speaking of the waterlogged corpses, is the one in the damaged buildings still the only one that appears if you're not involved in this quest? He's been poking around there for a while clawing at people.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was on the 4th floor when I met the mask guy, which is why I was unsure as to whether it was connected to the quest. In fact I did send in a bug report about that, but it must have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Also, I have never been to the ship nor do I have it in my quest log, but the waterlogged corpse has been popping up in the places I mentioned in my first post.

The encounter that wandered off to the 4th floor of the Abandoned Buildings can potentially be the completion of that quest. So what you're seeing is one potential ending out of context.

I thought I responded to everyone who reported that, but there were at least three, so I might have lost you in the shuffle. If so, sorry about that :/

I can 'turn back the clock' as Vholes mentioned and let you access the quest normally, but I didn't want to just go removing skills from people when it was fundamentally my messup.

Lol, I guess nobody noticed that Larry gives you a book of sailing stories if you ask him about himself. I noticed this like a month ago and figured people already knew it. Added.

it probably does something different that ulocking the quest as its possible to get that quest without even seeing that book
