Over here we talked a bunch about how donation would be handled. There's really only one hanging question to my mind, which is: how old donation items will rotate out.
Before we start, I am pretty set on old items rotating out permanently with the caveat that entire concepts won't go away. This excludes them returning later at higher price or anything like that. I much prefer the "when they're gone, they're gone" so I'm more wondering how people would prefer them to leave availability.
Item of the Month: Very literally from the Xth of the month to the Xth of next month, this item is available. Upside is that it's very predictable and it's obviously done okay by KoL.
Downside is that, particularly starting earlier in the game's lifespan than I'd want to, very limited quantities of the old items will exist for new players or people who just missed out that month.
This can be paired with certain longer-term items or an expanded time frame, so the "Month" isn't really set in stone.
Rolling Items: Instead of being available for one month each, items may stay around for some number of months like three or five or something. So you'd end up with the last, say, five months items all available.
This'll give people a lot more time and also give options for where to spend your hard-earned coins.
Items of However Long I Want: If you don't mind me having god-like fiat, I can just release items whenever I get a good idea (and awesome art). This would probably work a lot like Rolling Items but with new items releasing less often.
Benefit is really that the items on average will probably be more inspired and in the market longer. Downside is that I'd prefer something a bit more structured, but I'm cool with it if everyone else is.
Limited Edition:
There's a literal supply of the item and once they're gone, they're gone. This is mostly intended to make sure there's enough supply before it goes, rather than driving collection. Unless there are grave miscalculations and it sells out quickly, it'd live alongside other items.
Upside here is that the number of items can basically be declared in advance, avoiding the early item problem. Not really sure on the downside, honestly, other than potentially having to fine-tune the supply on different items.
Other Stuff:
There might be some other cool options that I'm missing, so go ahead and shout them out.
I'm very slightly leaning towards the Limited Edition option, because it seems to handle supply in a fairly consistent, organic way. But the question is really a question of community, so I'd appreciate any feedback folks have to offer.
Cheers!
