Okay, I guess it is possible to get the up/down encounter with the pins pulled out. As long as you've won enough fights, I guess? I've now gone down for the second time, and got the 'barely seems to move' result, with the pins pulled out.

Also, I'm not sure what controls the messages you get when climbing down, but I think they determine the type of XP you get on the next level. "The maze in your hands moves in intricate patterns." seems to have lead to Perception XP, while "The maze in your hands barely seems to move unless you haul at it." seems like it resulted in Strength.

Edit: I've now hit a masked spider twice in a row. I fought one, pulled the pins out, then ran into another rather than getting the XP encounters. So I'm not certain how this is working.

Fresh reset, first thing I did was equip the puzzle and use it:

You pull some pins out of the maze, letting it begin to shift.

The maze in your hands barely seems to move unless you haul at it.

Is it related to strength? I was non-etheric too which might matter.

I think the very first time you use the puzzle, you get one of the same 4 (presumably) messages as when climbing down, and that determines what XP you'll be getting. Dunno if there's a way to control the message, though.

Just a few notes on what we know with respect to combat within the maze:

• The XP value of the combat is equal to your current "floor" within the maze and you begin on "Floor 1".
• Each time you descend your "floor" number increases by 1 and a new combat result to fit your floor value is selected and the results are not uniform between players.
• The fight you receive on a particular floor does not appear to vary for the entirety of your stay on the floor. Also it is possible to be attacked while shifting the puzzle but we don't fully understand why.
• Of the opponents currently known there is the 1 XP bipedal rat, 2 XP armored serpent, 3 XP masked spider, & 4 XP robed corpse.
• Fights as large as 4 opponents have been observed, and all known opponents can appear in multiples.
• If you have a reset in progress or lower stats exercise caution when using the maze. Bipedal rats are relatively weak but large groups can be found quite early in the maze giving them the potential to overrun you if unprepared. From Floor 4 onward the robed corpse can be encountered which has a fair amount of HP and a focus on Etheric techs. The armored serpents can force you to target them so be mindful of them if you decide to go in with a single target deck especially if they are accompanying a robed corpse.
• At current we know there are at least 10 Floors and a possible end at Floor 16 with 4 robed corpses. This number could possibly increase if new opponents are larger groups are encountered.

Edit:
Just had a 5 opponent encounter on Floor 11. Looks like the estimated end could be Floor 20 with 5 robed corpses based on current details.

Edit the 2^nd:
Have an 8 opponent encounter on Floor 14. Revising possible limit to Floor 32 with 8 robed corpses.

Edit the 3^rd:
Have observed a 9 opponent encounter. Also after 18 floors the fight composition has not deviated from the expected results.

Well this item is just oodles of fun isn't it?

Any dlc planned for this item? I'm thinking a +5 more enemies dlc will turn this item from oodles of fun all the way up to noodles of fun.

Hmm. Looks like there are special plural messages, after all. Just got a combat where the enemy layout was robed corpse, bipedal rat, robed corpse, bipedal rat and got this message:

You glance down into the maze, finding it pulling you harder and harder, until it seems to surround you with flashing metal and moving shadows.

Ratlike shapes rush forward, eager to serve their masters' call.

Just an end note about combat xp within the shifting maze. The pattern of it increasing by 1 each floor stops being a reliable depth indicator once you hit the mid-to-late 20's. The highest total I observed was a few instances of 29xp. Once this point is reached you'll need to rely on the xp from the shifting non-combat to assess your current depth.

The following will make the trek a lot more bearable: Zaibatsu mister, techs that target groups, smoking eclipse, and gritty ointment prepared in advance. If you have access to a shield of scales and a classic writing desk for Creative Hollowness they are also welcome. Getting skills like Pyro, Leaping Flame, Gunslinger, and Focused Mind are also good ideas.

Through swapping between the shifting maze and the Myers sampling kit, I've managed to fight all the opponents from the maze with the sampling kit equipped. If there's any special drops for that, they aren't guaranteed ones.
