I'm not getting this against the lake serpent in the docks, while etheric. Is there some other mechanism?

(account deleted)It occurs to me that when I got it I had boosted my stealth power with serpent knuckls, as well as scaled pants and a scaled vest. Creme brulee reports getting it with 4 stealth power, which I'll bet was from serpent knuckles. I wouldn't be surprised if the serpent knuckles were the key to getting the technique.
I think I had a wicked knife equipped the one time I got this technique, fighting a lake serpent in the sewers. I was definitely using serpent knuckles as my habitual weapon at the time, so it's possible I'm mistaken.
edit: it's certainly not a given if you do have serpent knuckles equipped, and creme brulee says he got it without stealth attacks. Not sure where to go from here. Keep testing the knuckles I suppose.

I'm having absolutely no luck here. I've tried with a full stealth deck using the Black Gemstone (+8 stealth custom), and using the Serpent knuckles. Needless to say, I'm more than a little frustrated. And I can't imagine that I'm not dishing out enough damage:
You sneak up behind the lake serpent and punch her square in the kidney for 19 damage.
The lake serpent slams her tail down on you dealing 7 damage.
You stab the lake serpent with a switchblade for 10 damage.
The lake serpent waits until the last moment, then leaps into you, dealing 5 damage.
You splash acid on the lake serpent. It burns terribly and she takes 20 damage.
Did you try wearing the scaled vest and pants? The description of the pants in particular ("These pants are covered with swathes of massive scales. They could probably stop a knife, but they feel like they should do much more.") might hint at hidden depths.
I went back and fought the terrible serpent again (I forgot what I was wearing before/the stats I had), now with the following:
Perception: 36 (39)

This time I was using ranged/fire hybrid deck, with no stealth tech whatsoever.
So, I guess it's probably fighting the serpent with scaled vest and scaled pants equipped.

edit: I tested a few more times without scaled vest or scaled pants equipped. Both are required - seems to be an "outfit bonus" to learn the technique. Side note, try ratty suit against rats? sigh, maybe not.
Fought serpent with serpent knuckles, scaled vest and scaled pants. Fight lasted for three rounds. Got Serpent Strike.
Fight after that, 1 round, serpent strike. :)
Fight without serpent knuckles, serpent strike.
Fight without serpent knuckles and scaled pants, no serpent strike.
Fight with serpent knuckles and scaled vest, no pants, no serpent strike.
Also nothing from the rat with ratty attire. What? I had energy left over.
