Is this book by any chance a quest item? Also, had you already killed the corpse in the Oil Slick? I'm thinking that maybe this book is an alternate way to get the Ship of the Damned quest if you've already killed him, which also explains why those of us who got the quest from him have never seen this item.

I got this book from Larry (I did his quest) after I already beat the Ship of the Damned quest. It's not a quest item, and I never killed the corpse in the oil slick.
When used:

You page through the book, reading the stories. They're classics, but all well written.

The stories eerily reflect the things you saw on that ghost ship. The zombies here, the ghost sailors there, the gold, the shaman in his bone mask, and all the rest.

You're almost surprised to find that your time on the ship isn't described.

Well, I'm on the damned ship and Larry still won't talk about it, so there's got to be something going on. What I don't like about the corpse-murderer hypothesis is that the corpse explicitly can't die until its soul is returned to it. Anyone who kills the corpse can return later and ask it about the ship, right? It's possible that Kinak threw in this book to Larry so that even people who obsessively kill the corpse can get the quest… but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect people to have to talk to it.

As for the post-quest variation, it's quite likely that's a universal thing, and I just never found a reason to chat with Larry again after the quest was over.

EDIT: Oh, and is it a quest item?

You get the option to tell Larry to stop reading Buttons the sailing stories when you help the Bone Shaman and he tells you his secrets (which mentions the reading and Buttons). Then you get the book.

Resetting then reading the book without having asked the corpse about the ghost ship, gives the first message. Don't know if there's a point to the book…
