For someone who didn't do any seed planting or anything leading up to the party, the cutover point at which the pumpkins allowed me to peacefully take some pumpkins was somewhere in the 5-10 corpses range, along with soil a few times.

The only difference for fighting them through the burn them down option?

The message difference does seem notable enough to suggest that something might be getting tracked there.
