It's not for overkilling… I did exactly 20 damage to a Dock Security (who has 20 HP) and got a crushing punch. I got it even though he dodged all damage! Have also gotten it from a single round, so it's not the fact that I used punch twice in a row. Could be something to do with brass knuckles being equipped? I don't recall if I had them on but it's quite possible.

Round 1:

You dive and tumble, your coat billowing.
The guard shoots you for 2 damage, but you catch the worst of the attack in your billowing coat, avoiding all of the damage.

You dive for cover.

You punch the guard for 6 damage.

Round 2:

You punch the guard for 6 damage, but he ducks behind cover, which absorbs all of the damage.
The guard dives for cover.

You wait until the last moment, then leap into the guard, dealing 14 damage.
The guard shoots you for 1 damage.

You've won the battle!

It's not for having (brass) knuckles equipped either - just got it with a riot baton. I don't know anymore. Maybe just flat chance?

Doing a certain amount of damage with punch? Certainly not flat chance - I've never heard of anyone getting it right away in the park, for instance. Could be chance affected by how much damage you do, though.

If we want to test that sometime, lower Strength to 0 or at least as low as possible, and keep ramping up the melee power and keep track of how often you get this at every level. (Noting opponenet defense if you're fighting different people.)

Looking through some old combat logs, I found this round:

You call out, invoking the twisted hounds that haunt the ether. The hound appears as a spectral echo and tears into the writhing mass for 20 damage.
The writhing mass lashes you with a tentacle, dealing 1 damage.
The writhing mass lashes you with a tentacle, dealing 2 damage.

You muster the strongest strike you can underwater, dealing 16 damage.
The writhing mass grabs you with its tentacles, but you manage to fight them back.
The writhing mass grabs you with its tentacles, but you manage to fight them back.

You punch the writhing mass, throwing the whole weight of your body behind it and dealing 19 damage.

The second pass confirms that we're underwater (Power strike message), but the third pass gives the normal crushing punch message. Looks like there's something more complicated going on, like you only get the weak crushing punch message if not a closer while underwater or something. Needs spading.

A couple rounds later, it's a weak punch again, but not as a closer:

You slam into the writhing mass and deal 15 damage before it can fend off the attack.
The writhing mass lashes you with a tentacle, dealing 1 damage.

You throw an awkward punch at the writhing mass, throwing some of your weight behind it for 21 damage.

You muster the strongest strike you can underwater, dealing 26 damage.

New theory: you become eligible for getting this technique by using Punch with at least 12 Strength. Has anybody ever gotten it with less than that?

EDIT: I got one with 10 (15) Strength, in a fight. Took out a Helidrone in one round in the course of which I threw one Punch. I had 14 Melee Power.

Successfully got Crushing Punch at a new low. I'll document a punch of other stats besides Strength and Melee Power in case it turns out those matter.

Perception: 4(9)
Reflexes: 5(10)
Strength: 7(12)
Will: 3(8)

In the combat I learned crushing punch in, my first punch technique I'm pretty darn sure did 12 damage. The second and last punch did 8 damage.

Melee Power: 4
Etheric Defense: 2
Melee Defense: 3
+2 Power when opponent doesn't have a technique.

Just got it with Strength 8 (11) and 8 Melee Power. I'm feeling pretty good about the theory that it's from using Punch with your buffed Strength > 10.

Got crushing punch at 11 strength. No buffs or debuffs. Just straight 11 strength. Other stats:

Perception: 7
Reflexes: 10
Will: 8 (12)

Power
Etheric Power: 2 Melee Power: 11

Defense
Etheric Defense: 6 Melee Defense: 2 Ranged Defense: 2

Other
First Aid: 1

I just learned an instance with Strength of 5 (10). I was wielding an old fishing pole at the time and don't have Pugilism, so my Melee Power was pitiful. The attack was unopposed, if that matters.

Just got crushing punch at Strength 5 (10) for the first time.

You dive for cover.
The poseur leaps into you for 1 damage, but you duck behind cover, which absorbs all of the damage.

You punch the poseur for 6 damage.

You close on the poseur, then slash him for 12 damage with your bladed gauntlet.


You've won the battle!

Pretty sure now 10 buffed strength is the cut-off point.

Melee Power: 3
Bonus Melee Power at Short Distance
