So, I got this progression just from adding water, and adding food once somewhere in the middle with no obvious results:
The pot's soil looks more like sand./The pot's soil is dry./The pot's soil is visibly damp./The pot beneath is filled with dark mud.

Adding more water at that point didn't seem to make a difference. Adding food again got it to: The pot beneath is filled with an earthly-smelling morass.

Adding food again got it to: The pot beneath is filled with stinking mud.

And it's not going any further from there. I assume there's also a line of descriptions for adding food but not water.

With visibly damp soil (and I added food once), my tree seems to have gotten a fungal infection overnight. Peering at it (while sober) got me some strength XP.

Valmo had stinking mud, and his tree had a new option to trim it, and peering at it got him into a fight with some sort of grub, that taught a technique when he won. He was etheric at the time. After killing the grub the tree seemed to be healthy again.

I had stinking mud and had fed the plant multiple times when I got snowflake fungus.

Having left it alone yesterday, I'm now back to 'dry' soil, and getting Will XP from peering at it. It was 2 XP the first time, with 0 Will and 0 XP. At 1 Will I got 3 XP. Think I'm probably going to try leaving it alone for a bit, see what happens if gets all dried out.

Edit: Another day, now the tree looks unhealthy and the soil is back to looking like sand. This time there were mites on it, and I got 4 XP in Reflexes.

Edit: Left the tree alone, still looks unhealthy with soil like sand. Mites again, but this time I was etheric and they actually attacked me.

Your little tree doesn't seem to be doing very well. Its leaves are discolored and drooping, but it's hard to guess at the exact cause. The pot's soil is visibly damp.

PEER CLOSER: You inspect the tree's leaves, but find more sign of problems on its bark. There are more than a few unhealthy white flecks, but a larger collection forms a snowflake-like structure over the tree's fine bark. The damage probably goes deeper, but you can't help yourself, picking away at the fruiting structures until you have several living snowflakes and the tree looks moderately better. You found: 2 bits of snowflake fungus

Not really a good spot to put this on the page yet. We'll probably need to reorganize and summarize results once we get things nailed down a bit more. But for reference, it looks like the fights don't cost any energy, or consume energy of etheric.

I've started up a table of results, since they mostly seem to be consistent based on soil messaging. There was one conflicting report from borkman, though… so maybe there's some randomization across players/resets? Also, at the moment it looks like the water level is the important thing, because I got a burrowing grub at another one of the higher water level messages, I just lost my note of which one. Food must be doing something though.

The tree started out dry today — I added food and it was still just dry, then adding food again it was dry and nutty. Adding more food still nutty. So it looks like the nutty message requires at least 2 food or it can go into the negative to start the day?

Okay, my tree started out dry today, but it was sick and then had a grub in it. It also dropped from 'southside dumpster' straight to dry instead of 'strangely nutty', so it also doesn't seem to just be losing 1 food per day. I'm listing here what was in the table for reference, but it doesn't look like it'll actually be useful in this form, so I'm removing the results columns from the page to avoid confusion.
