Hm… which do you think looks better, the centered picture on this page or the left-side image in, say Grateful Guard? I'm not certain. Larger images are better centered, but these could go either way.

I really have no preference either way. Either.
Until now I've just put the pictures on the left, because that saved me the trouble of having to press an additional key.
And having to remember to press that key :)
Come to think of it, I might have a very slight preference for left-side, because all the text is on the left and it's sort of a listing.
However, if the text is right below it the picture, centered looks better in my opinion. See Smuggler's Market
I think that only happens when you get a new fishing pole, and I think that only happens when you don't currently have a new fishing pole. I'll test it next run?
No need, I've just salvaged my 8 new fishing poles (nothing but polysteel, I'm going to suggest fishing lines to Kinak though).
Didn't get any dropped items the first seven times.
Killed a dockhand (charged the crates) in case you needed to kill the new pole's owner, but nothing on the next "fishing spot" encounter either. Oh well. Continued to fish and charge at crate unloaders, but nothing in the next two encounters.
I then charged the chatting dockhands since those were the ones who definitely fished at that spot. But no dropped items on the next encounter either.
I'm pretty sure I've been stuck at "comfortable" fishing level for this entire time, I don't think I've even got a "you got better at fishing" message, even with training hooks… or does that only happen pre-skill?

As a side note, I noticed the dockhands also discussed their favorite TV shows, so I set up a descrambled TV and watched it immediately after passing my thermos around. I did get an unusually maritime version of the crazy man show, but nothing we don't know about:
"singing fishmen that lure dock workers to their doom, voodoo zombies from beneath the waves, and flesh-hungry ghouls on the waterfront! It's the end! The end of times!"
Tried it again on both TVs with some other mundane results, so I suspect it was either a funny coincidence or a bizarrely subtle 1/day thing just for flavor. (They also discuss "work" and "sports", but that seems too vague. I'll try Sports Blogs.)

I'm not sure what the deal is. All I ever had to do was hand over a thermos of joe to unlock the encounter, and then I'd just occasionally find stuff dropped there, no interaction with the dockhands or anybody else required.

It'll probably take some time to get enough data on this but I am confident of the following:
- High test fishing line is also a possible additional result.
- Additional results occur in addition to your actual catch.
- It is possible to get more than one extra item based on a trip that yielded 4 pikes, pants, high test line, and a lost hook.
In a couple weeks I'll probably have a better idea of what is required. Today I had the extra message 16/18 trips to the hidden spot so either I am very lucky or it is possible to increase odds of additional items occurring. I'm hoping to obtain some high test line without the extra message to isolate the nature of the line with respect to the extra item mechanic.
Edit:
Finally got a trip that gave high test line without the extra message so the additional item line is separate. Still hard to discern the nature of the line in results where a pole or hook is obtained but without enough other items to make the source of the line obvious.
