Let's say you're speedrunning, and have already picked up all the other skills you can reasonably acquire. If you have spare energy, where do you go to pick up the largest volume of salvagable crap to try for this skill?
In the beginning, men were mortal.
I usually don't get the salvaging tools at all in-run unless I'm doing Lo's quest. Although with scrubs and any (?) air filter sufficing to get you into the Operating Theatre now, maybe I should rethink that. At any rate, I have never been in a situation where I had enough time to gather enough salvageable things AND didn't have another, easier-to-get skill to pursue instead.
I suppose maybe a gang's scrap pit might be a possibility, but I'm not sure about the maximum number of items you can get from one or how much effort it would require to keep them sufficiently stocked. Also, it looks like many of the items a scrap pit can yield are not salvageable. A Third Eye Stash has a ton of stuff in it, but it would take a pretty well-coordinated gang effort to pull off getting one of those in-run.
You don't do the Lost Son quest? That seems like a pretty easy way to pick up a skill… and you needed a containment suit before anyway, so I'm a bit confused.
I was actually in this situation my last run (4/8/315) but didn't manage to pick up enough crap to salvage. All I did was fish after 4/8/298, though.
In the beginning, men were mortal.
@scrap pit idea: I think a fully stocked scrap pit (which seems to take me, guessing, around 10 days straight scavenging without help) is 2*(16+15+14+…+1) items, so all 3 are 6*16*17/2=816 items, at the cost of 16*6=96 energy.
I might have the high end wrong (might be counting the dish segment), but it's definitely at least 15, and didn't seem to want to go higher. And the number of items seemed to go down by 1 every two scavenges (again, not sure if this counts the dish segment).
But even starting at 15, the first 6 energy would give you 90 items already.
Thrid eye stash: all you need from your gang is one person to take control of all pvp zones, right? That's still a possible one-man job (with 100/40/40). I don't know how a gang would help you defeat the hunter consistently, though. Custom weapons don't show up before 16 will …
Salvaged some stuff one by one until I got the skill so I could get an exact count. Got it after:
- 100 My little idodu and 136 riot batons
Got it at exactly 230 items salvaged. Traded almost everything I got in a casual playthrough for a better chance at metallic powder… sounds good to me!
