To describe what I mean by the fanged snowman's attacks…

You calmly toss a vial at the snowman, engulfing it in flames that deal 19 damage and continue burning.
The snowman inhales, then breathes a cloud of sparkling motes on you. You shiver, chilled to the core, and take 10 damage.

You hurl a vial of NitroX at the snowman. It explodes into a ball of flame, dealing 25 damage, but the winds draw your attack harmlessly into the snowman's maw.
The snowman opens its mouth wide, drawing in everything around it like a terrible wind.

You toss a grenade, landing just in front of the snowman. It explodes, peppering it with hot shards of metal for 20 damage.
The snowman breathes the wave of fire back against you, dealing 35 damage.

The clinging mixture continues to burn the snowman for 24 damage.

The snowmen have learned to deal with fire. We're all doomed! Doomed!

Nope, I've been getting the exact same messages, except I've been using exclusively melee attacks. I've updated the main page to reflect this.

You line up a powerful strike, crushing the snowman for 21 damage, but the winds draw your attack harmlessly into the snowman's maw.
The snowman opens its mouth wide, drawing in everything around it like a terrible wind.

You punch the snowman, throwing the whole weight of your body behind it and dealing 14 damage.
As you pull back from your last attack, the maw closes on you for 20 damage.

I can confirm that the maw closing in attack is melee. The breathes fire attack is most likely fire, so it seems Al's theory is correct about type.

With 8 Ranged power, I saw the following attack:

You shoot the snowman for 7 damage, but the winds draw your attack harmlessly into the snowman's maw.
The snowman opens its mouth wide, drawing in everything around it like a terrible wind.

You pump your remaining rounds into the snowman, dealing 5 damage.
The snowman exhales a great wind, carrying countless shards of ice, tearing into you for 13 damage.

Which seems like it should be impossible (the first attack is showing a ranged defense of 3-6, the second 8-10). Maybe reactive defense or something odd?

It could be something like Practiced Step, which does ranged damage and defends against ranged damage when following a ranged attack, except in this case it depends on the opponent's attack, not its own.

The following are intended results, right? I remember threads popping up about technique type being checked before conditionals, but can't find them now.

You fire a rocket. It travels slowly towards the snowman, but it manages to avoid it.
The snowman opens its mouth wide, drawing in everything around it like a terrible wind.

The snowman breathes the wave of fire back against you, dealing 17 fire damage.

A cloud of deep smoke surrounds the snowman. You can faintly make out snakes, razor blades, and unnameable creatures in the smoke. It's dealt the snowman 19 etheric damage by the time it's cleared.
The snowman tries to sink its icy fangs into you, but is driven back by your fire.

Kinak explained why it works this way on one of the last podcasts — same as why the Apply Part Of X To Y bonus is applied all at once after the rest of the bonuses are calculated.

Eg. if there were two technques:

• A melee technique that did ranged damage vs. melee techniques.
• A ranged technique that did melee damage vs. ranged techniques.

When these two oppose each other, we end up in an irresolvable chain of alternating M-R-M-R-M-R-M-R- resolution. So instead, it checks the "base" form of the techniques (which is the damage type actually listed on the technique that we see).
