The snowman focuses its gaze on you. You feel a strange tingling, then start bleeding as a hole is bored into your flesh, dealing 1 damage.

The snowman focuses its red eye at you. Flames boil out of the eye like a serpent, striking at you for 20 damage.

Its eyes spin wildly in their sockets. A whirlwind of conflicting forces knocks you flying for 23 damage.

Theory:

First attack whatever

second attack is green focusing or red focusing

third attack is eyes spinning wildly, either the whirlwind one or the 100 damage one

ouch, theory disproved. I just got the wall of fire as the second attack. In related news, the colour of the ornament being determined by the focusing colour is also disproved.

I fought a bunch of staring snowmen with fire and melee outfit/deck combos and always got the massive fire damage from the spinning eye attack. After gawking at man mobile's profile, I tried an outfit with 22 etheric power and 7 etheric defense and got the conflicting forces message instead. So I'm still not sure whether it's etheric power or defense that makes the difference, although I'd guess it's etheric power.

EDIT: Valera got the fire from spinning eyes with 18 etheric power and 7 etheric defense. So I'll bet the cutoff is 20+ etheric power.

EDIT again: Same thing with 20 etheric power, she says. 21+?

Its eyes spin wildly in their sockets. The green orb snaps into place, staring at you. Your reflection twists violently in the eye and your body follows, dealing 115 damage.

Doesn't seem to be only etheric power. Maybe I need to be using an etheric technique at the same time?

EDIT: not with crystal gate at least. If you deal more than 50 damage in 2 techniques, maybe it dies before it gets to the eyeball attack, and etheric power is just a handy way to do lots of damage.

hypothesis:
green eye -> etheric
red eye -> fire
conflicting forces -> etheric==fire

defense or power?

Just got the conflicting message while trying for 50+ damage quickly:

You line up a powerful strike, crushing the snowman for 44 damage.
The snowman focuses its gaze on you. You feel a strange tingling, then start bleeding as a hole is bored into your flesh, dealing 10 damage.

The snowman focuses its red eye at you. Flames boil out of the eye like a serpent, striking at you for 16 damage.

Its eyes spin wildly in their sockets. A whirlwind of conflicting forces knocks you flying for 19 damage.

6 Etheric Power
16 Melee Power
8 Stealth Power
9 Etheric Defense
4 Fire Defense
4 Ranged Defense

I had fought it once before with the exact same equipment, effects and deck and got the 115 damage from the red eye though. Only thing different that I can think of is only using 1 technique this time.

maybe not using etheric or fire techniques against it to make it use conflicting forces?

Edit: I've been getting green ornaments so far; I've only been using etheric techniques to kill it.

Hm… looking at the Hound's cough cough (I like calling it that), it seems possible that it only does the massive damage if either of you have used a fire technique beforehand? (It usually uses the wall of fire). See #27504 and #27552 (low damage, no previous fire), and #28193 (high damage, player used fire but snowman didn't). And of course Al's post above (low damage, no fire).

And i was using pure melee. Ill have to buy those ornaments from someone or say goodbye to the boards

I mean if either of you (the snowman or the player) use fire techniques - it seems to do high damage when it does a wall of fire attack beforehand, and/or if the player uses a fire attack. Attempting to evade the first (wall of) fire attack (and not doing any fire damage yourself) would be a good strategy. Seems to me that it wouldn't do the big damage in that case.
