This is the results from using Nitro X followed by Dance of Ashes against the two Midgard Heavy Guard (Unarmed) encounter in the Records Vault:

You carefully consider the situation and hurl the NitroX precisely into the midst of your opponents. It engulfs them in a ball of flame and showers them with debris, dealing 18 damage.
The guard slams into you and deals 9 melee damage before you can fend off the attack.
The guard raises its armored limbs into a defensive position.

You dance on the fading flames.
The guard bears down on you for 7 melee damage, but the fearless dance carries you away from all but 5 damage.
The guard punches you, throwing the whole weight of its body behind it and dealing 12 melee damage, but the fearless dance carries you away from all of the damage.

I targeted the first Midgard heavy guard.

Relevant stats:
10 Etheric Power
10 Ranged Power

5 Etheric Defense
5 Fire Defense
5 Melee Defense
4 Stealth Defense

So…I think I'm missing something here. How can the defense range be at least 2-12?

That does seem odd. My only explanation is that the "bears down" (or maybe heavy guards in general) have some hidden Restrain, making your evasion less effective? It would be possible to block 2-12 damage if you had 8 restrain on a 10-20 defense technique?

EDIT: Yes, this is restrain, specifically on the Bear Down technique. Good catch.

With 0 Reflexes, 5 Evasion Power, Dive for Cover normally blocks 9 damage against these guys, but for bear down:

The guard bears down on you for 10 melee damage, but you duck behind cover, which absorbs all but 7 damage.

So 6 Restrain I believe. (I should have thought to test this since the wording of the attack is so similar to the Ruins Octopus bear down attack which also restrains. (But with tentacles.))

No apparent interaction between this technique and Fire Run, either following or preceding.
