Got it with (35=7energy) walkaways (from choice encounters), 13 runaways (from combat), and 3 noncombats. I'm guessing there are 3 counters, and you get a feather the first time one of them hits 20. And you get it immediately: I always get the owl feather right after a set of 5 walkaways, never when I'm between energy.

Hypothesis:
Hawk counter: Combat victories, both regular and from choice (each +1)
Raven counter: Noncombats, both regular and from choice (each +1)
Owl counter: Walkaways from choice (each +.2) and Runaways from combat (each +1)

To be tested: Free walkaways and runaways, failed runaways, combat losses, whether walkaways are really +.2 or whether only the ones where you lose energy count (as +1)

Do you also think the counters get *reset* when one of them reaches 20?
Because I think I would have gotten more than two hawk feathers from all the combats on the shoreline (even between all the fishing (which sometimes results in a combat) and faeries) …

Yes, I assume they all reset when one is reached, otherwise you'd be getting lots of feathers. And who knows, there could well be other factors.
