You get this buff in combat (not necessarily by being damaged—I got it once when I wasn't hit at all). It wears off before the combat ends. This is not a bug, according to Kinak. You get the morale bonus in-combat, and you still get the stat-skewing effects on XP gains even though it wears off when the combat ends.
Just to clarify, since you gain the effect before the combat is over, it will lose duration normally from Energy loss at the end of the combat. But, as Mag said, even effects removed at the end of combat should have their XP modifications applied.
There are also certain effects that will be removed entirely at the end of combat, regardless of the result. In A Pit is the example that leaps to mind here. This isn't one of those.

So conceivably, if you got a free runaway, you would be able to get a turn of this to use for the next encounter. If my toxic lash theory is right, that might be the only way to get it if unless you get two oozes?
Hm, I could have sworn I got more than 1 energy of the effect before, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I thought the effect was removed if you took off the pants, so you'd still need 2 oozes (which Kinak has said isn't the case).
Oh, and Kinak, is that Flying Eye etheric defense lowering effect removed like In a Pit? Was my unsuccessful attempt to greet Dr. Johnson with it active even more wasted than I thought? :P

The serpent continues bleeding from the jagged wounds, taking 6 damage.

I'm guessing you get 2 energy of the effect if you avoid all damage in a round, but you can never gain additional energy if you already have it active.

Playing around with my oozes a bit - got 3 energy of Oooze Symbiosis from this round of combat (which went down to 2 energy a couple rounds later when the combat ended):

The eye batters you with its wings, dealing 4 damage, but you duck behind cover, which absorbs all of the damage.
Got 2 energy from this round, despite not avoiding all damage from everyone:
You dive for cover.
The dockhand sneaks up behind you and punches you square in the kidney for 7 damage.
The dockhand punches you for 3 damage, but you duck behind cover, which absorbs all of the damage.
EDIT: nothing special for getting the weird configuration message for the egg with symbiosis active.
