I just got the message "You let the stone beast move close, then fire a single blast of smoking polysteel at point black range, dealing 21 damage." fighting the stone beast as he gored me with his horns. Did the move change or is there some sort of "super close"range? Also, typo reported.
Somehow I missed Llamaman's post, so I've rediscovered the wheel here:
You let the ghoul move close, then fire a single blast of smoking polysteel at point blank range, dealing 25 damage.
The ghoul rakes you with its claws for 1 damage.
I was using the improbable gun. I was thinking maybe this was some special effect of that, but Rake Claws is chain 1, so bonus damage for being at point blank range on account of the technique also makes sense.
At the time I had 12 Ranged Power and 13 (18) Perception.
So… hm. I'm unclear on what 'point blank range' entails. Are melee techniques divided into 'close' and 'super close'? Is 'letting your enemy move close' indicative of opening with a shotgun blast as you wait for the enemy to approach? Or did the message just change?
In the beginning, men were mortal.
Hmm, could be a special opener message—I'll have to look to see where in my chain it crops up.
If that's not it, my guess is that it gives the special message against very low chain attacks. The chain 1 and 0 melee attacks are things like Ghoul Bite, where you're right there in close with your opponent. It'd make sense if those count as point blank range, as opposed to merely close range where you're at least an arm's length away.
Longarm -> Indirect Fire -> Steady Shot -> Quick Shot -> Shotgun Blast-> Swordplay -> Crushing Punch -> Lash Out -> Ghoul Bite -> Organ Feast
Okay, I knew that applied for ranged techniques but somehow I never realized chain # = distance for just about everything else as well. I will now picture my character running forward or moving away as he fights every single round. Kinak, you're awesome.
In the beginning, men were mortal.
Wow, that totally makes sense now!
EDIT: That explains why the whole chaining thing works - you can't shoot someone and then punch them right away - you need to take a second to run around and get closer.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who hadn't noticed that. >_>
I had some vague idea that sniper techniques were on the opposite end of the chain as shotgun techniques, but I hadn't realized it was so widespread across attack types and even visible chain # to chain # like I laid out above.
Let's leap to all sorts of unsupported narrative conclusions like "adding bat guano to acid makes it 5/3 times as aerodynamic" and "hounds will only attack things within shotgun range". ;)
In the beginning, men were mortal.
Just got this:
You catch the ghoul with a point-blank shotgun blast for 12 damage.
The ghoul rakes you with its claws for 2 damage. The ghoul leaps a shocking distance straight up.
I'm 90% sure that rake claws is chain 1. (Leap is certainly chain 2.) Either something odd going on with the ghoul chains or it's not always just vs. Melee at chain ≤1 for the super-close message.
Edit: I'm fairly certain the smoking polysteel variant of this attack is from using an improbable gun.
