You latch onto the hunter and tear a chunk out of it with your teeth, dealing 23 damage, but the hunter hides among the seaweed, avoiding all but 15 damage.
The hunter swims quickly, taking refuge in a stand of seaweed. You viciously slash the hunter for 23 damage.
The hunter slaps you with its tail, dealing 2 damage.
I'm curious about this attack:
The hunter begins a strange song, which soon fills the water. The lake feels suddenly claustrophobic, as though something is closing in on you.
From the text, it seems like if you wait long enough something should appear. I have tried to letting one of these guys beat on me for a bunch of rounds, but the attack message has always been the same. I asked Kinak if it was working properly and he said:
Yeah, it's fine.
*cackles maniacally*
Unfortunately, a deck that's good for not killing these guys is also very good for getting killed quickly by the Ruins Octopus. Although, come to think of it, I have yet to see one of those today. Maybe this attack unlocks that encounter for the day? Anyway, it bears some investigation, given Kinak's reaction.
I've been wondering about that too, but after my hypothesis that the attack made your next combat be against an octopus was disproven, I was out of ideas. I've also met an octopus without seeing that attack message today. Maybe the effect only materializes if you have <3 diving, or don't have ocean sight?
That kind of looks like it's an evasion technique - has anyone tried each attack type against it? It sound like it might block etheric or will-based attacks.
Come to think of it - that might be an interesting twist: evasion techniques that block vs. an attribute (strength, will, etc.) rather than an attack type. For example, a spider could wrap you in webs, which prevents any reflexes-based attack because you can't move quickly.
Also, it would mean that the opponent's attacks attribute could be spaded. *pokes Kinak* :)

You're just a glutton for punishment, aren't you? :P
Actually, there's some neat stuff I've got planned for Techniques overall. That's one thing that certainly isn't out of the question.
Cheers!
Kinak
No special text from the strange song technique if you have only two diving ability. I doubt it's an evasion technique—it's disrupted by melee attacks. I'll try some Etheric techniques just to make sure, though.
"So there's this monster who has an attack that doesn't seem to affect me."
Normal, sane response: "Score!"
Spade response: "Huh. I wonder how I can get it to hurt me."
I spent all day yesterday fighting these guys with an Etheric deck and never saw one use the strange song against me, even if I had a few rounds where I used Light of the Eye and didn't kill them off right away. One hit from any offensive technique pretty much invariably took them out. I imagine my sample size was just too small, but it's damn hard to have one of these guys live long enough to use the strange song if you're using etheric attacks.
If anyone out there is still wondering if that Strange Song is some sorta Evasion tech against Etheric attacks, you can stop.
You utter strange sounds that become shadowy chains, tearing from your mouth into the hunter for 41 damage.
