Whoa, check this out after stripping all hardening the first round, and finishing with the protein seeder, then next round:

You weave a chaotic memory construct based on the protein strings. It strangely resembles a serpent.
Password Lock weaves a memory construct that strongly resembles a serpent.

Your attack shatters the serpent, but doesn't damage Password Lock.

I wonder if that means we have to get… drops after they've… transformed?

It's pretty clear that you're supposed to seed the Net somehow with Protein Code and then harvest your results with protein reader or protein receiver. But exactly how you seed is not at all clear to me.

I got full control of a site after seeding (and then crashing) some of its defenders and had no new options running both protein hijacker and protein reader. But maybe I have to come back tomorrow.

Other possibilities:

• As Llamaman suggests, maybe you have to infect a defender and then wait around until it transforms. You might have to use Extract Code or something to get a code module off of it, or maybe protein reader would do the trick.
• Infect a defender, then unplug without crashing it so it can process the protein. Then return later to get the result.
• I hope: just use Protein Code in a bunch of hacking fights, then use protein receiver later. (The next day?)
