The use on this was weird for a while, but we have a clean slate now.

So, a hunch I had seems to be right, and there are different messages for some areas. Areas tested for certain so far: tainted shoreline, both halves of the lake, mushroom cavern, the slags. I'm sure there's more to find… I bet I should check out some of the labs.
Hm, looks like you can get at least one different message if you haven't completed David's quest. In the mushroom cave:
You stare into the orb, turning over David's request in your mind.
In the depths, darkness swirls like ink in water, outlining a moving image. A young man rests in a chair surrounded by some sort of electronic equipment.
Although he's wearing some sort of visor, it looks strikingly like a younger version of David. A doctor enters the inky view to inject something into his arm.
Darkness fills the orb, except for a single mote of light where the young man was lying. Dark shapes prowl in the shadows like circling wolves, although you can't make them out clearly.
The mote expands, dissolving darkness into more light… constructs of light flitting around like butterflies.
It doesn't make a lot of sense at a glance, but perhaps David might have some input.
I'm guessing that this lets you complete his quest, but cannot actually test that, as I picked a survivor already.
TeKRunneR, if you haven't already, and haven't handed over the orb, can you go the first floor of the damaged buildings and see if you can get that message? And also see if it only happens once… There's got to be something going on there, but I still can't figure out what.
I didn't get the vision on the first floor, so it looks like it has to be unlocked somehow. I'm probably going to reset tomorrow, so if someone wants me to try something before I do that, just say so.
The only idea I have for now is to use hound / spider drone memories until I get the message about strange patterns.
In addition to the effects on the page, I've tried Boon of Strength, Defensive Boon, Toxic Spores, Writhing Flesh, Broken World, and Emerald Gift.
Edit: And now Burning Vision, Personal Certainty, Artist's Perspective, Slags Poisoning, Terrifying Introspection, Spore Cloud, Crystal Mind, Dead Man's Hand and Ocean Song.
Yeah, I haven't noticed anything new from any of my contacts, with or without the orb equipped.
No go also on Chip Headache, No Pain, Lotus Map, Sugar Rush, Wide Open, Ease, Altered State, Focused Perception, and Studious Nature. I was hoping to get the memory about plunging into the maelstrom from using neural recordings, but no such luck. I'm thinking of trying Blue Eyes, but the eyedroppers are so hard to get I'd hate to waste one. :/
EDIT: Tried Blue Eyes. Nothing doing. I'm starting to worry that the effect we need to make progress with this thing hasn't been discovered yet.
This is only usable when not equipped. So maybe the key is to use it with some particular offhand item equipped? No go with the two big mystery items, cultured pearl and porous crystal. The lovely and multi-talented tome of binding doesn't help either. Nothing else in that list is jumping out at me.
Grasping at ever-more-tenuous straws, I notice that the first three messages all mention light (moon & explosion; Fae lights; brilliant headlamps), whereas the hound one talks about a world that has never seen light. Maybe somehow we have to light up that last one?
