I'm pretty sure the message actually just lists the others players whose generosity you've surpassed. For example, after using a total of 6 buckets, my message said:
"Your generosity has surpassed suuljin, Mr. Practical, Mike_Liviar, django, TeKRunneR, Dennis, Vholes Piper, Shrapnel, Betrayer, TheManStark, and Llamaman in our contest to see Emerald Gift live Halloween night!

After having used a total of 33 buckets, I've stopped receiving names with my messages a while ago. Does this mean I'm in last place, or that I've passed some sort of threshold?

It means you're on the rankings, but haven't changed place. If you hack your way over to the halloween server you can see your ranking.
