After fighting them a few times, I think that:
- making a ranged 5-chain anywhere in the combat ends the combat immediately and gives you Gem Break with a special text (I don't have it logged, but it's something about picking each of them with a well aimed shot)
- all damage done is hugely reduced; ranged to 5 damage, and others to 1 or 2
- they have evasive techs that don't reduce ranged, but instead eliminate it (instead of being told you do 5 damage, you get told you do your 20 damage, but the gems leave a strange gap in their movement, or that they speed away from you, oslt); this seems to (only?) happen after you break one or more of them; I also think I have only seen it happen from the start of the chain (i.e. first tech if one is broke, first two if two are broken)
So far, I always got beaten before even seeing the solitary gem (though I sometimes broke the 4th gem as I got beaten up), so I have no idea if making a ranged 5-chain there still gives a Gem Break or Gamer's Shot.
Actually, I think you get Gem Break if you make a chain where the length is the same as the number of gems remaining. Because I happened across that once by accident, and then later on wasn't paying attention and made a chain of less than five that ended the fight with a Gem Break when I didn't mean to.
And yes, the number of gems you've beaten is equivalent to the number of techniques from the start of a chain where ranged techniques simply won't work, so beating them completely without using some non-ranged techniques seems like it'd be pretty insane to pull off, if it's even possible.
But that would have to be *exactly* the number of gems remaining, because I definitely didn't get Gem Break by using a 4-chain when only two remained.
Unless it's "# of effective ranged techniques = # of gems remaining", but since ranged techs are rendered noneffective by missing gems, that would mean a 5-chain still.
I just checked, and apparently it is number of effective ranged techniques. But while it would need to be a chain of five, that does not mean that it would need to be a chain of five ranged techniques, which is where I ran into trouble. Unfortunately, it's an incredible pain in the ass to check because of the randomness of technique distribution.
OK, so I tried every technique I could think of.
Result:
- any ranged technique does 5 damage, regardless of its total power; the only eception I have seen was a precise shot with message
It's hard to get a good shot in, but you manage to land a hit for 4 damage.
and maybe short burst with no special message
- everything else (even dynamite) seems to be reduced to minimum (1-2 damage)
- using a stealth technique as an opener seems to change their first attack to stealth too, or something - it did much more damage to me than otherwise, and changed message:

- didn't break in the round where the total damage reached 23 or 24
- broke in the round where the total damage reached 34 and (second combat) 28
The second gem:
- 40 (counting from the start of the whole fight sequence) or 10 (counting from the the start of second form) wasn't enough
- 45/15 was
For the third gem:
- 50/5 wasn't enough
- then I got beaten

Last round, I got a 5-chain including a "do nothing" technique, so
- the condition there is probably just hitting the solitary gem with ranged on pass 5
- and you might want even more techs
Disgorge fire is not affected by opposing it with nitro.

Some tidbits:
-They are immune to the secondary effect of chemical mixture.
-The solitary gem may have less than 25 HP. Not sure, I slowly wore it down with fire and melee.
-Steady Hand has no obvious effect on them. Ranged attacks still missed entirely against their evasion, normal attacks still did little damage.
