I'm starting to notice a pattern to this "push clumsily" attack.

Combat #1

Round 3

You dive for cover.
The serpent pushes clumsily into you for 2 damage, but you duck behind cover, which absorbs all of the damage.

You dive and tumble like an action hero.

You catch her with an explosive round. It deals 8 damage.

Combat #2

Round 1

You dive for cover.
The serpent pushes clumsily into you for 1 damage, but you duck behind cover, which absorbs all of the damage.

You dive and tumble, your coat billowing.

You catch her with an explosive round. It deals 8 damage.

You fire a stream of needles into the serpent, dealing 19 damage.

You fire a stream of needles into the serpent, dealing 14 damage.

In 80 rounds of combat, I didn't get the "push clumsily" message once… I wonder what triggers it?

They were bugged for a while around Survivors' release. That message shouldn't appear on the serpents any longer, although it's still available through other means.

So, it looks like Terrible Serpents are underwater. Kind of. Acid splash, chemical mixture, and fuming acid all result in:

You splash the serpent, but it's washed off too quickly to have much effect.

Meanwhile, Short Burst, Clustered Shot, Tesla Coil, and Necrotic Vial all have their normal, above water combat messages.

Probably the splash-y techniques have some kind of tag, and the serpent has a "half underwater" effect where the tagged techniques don't work.

Combat text encounter for the Terrible Serpent

As you make your way along the beach, you hear a terrible roar. When you glance in its direction, a massive serpent rises out of the water.

Slime rolls off it in strange patterns that… you should probably think about that more later, as the serpent intends to make a snack out of you.

Note the bolded part. Might explain why the splash stuff washes off.

We kind of sort of have that categorized by the Underwater trait, which is different from the While Underwater trait. One or the other of those really should probably be renamed for clarity.

(Don't think the slime has anything to do with it because we see the same thing on the waterfront.)

I'm not sure exactly which bit unlocked it, but after unlocking everything including Serpent Pattern by using a protein receiver, I'm now sometimes getting two lake serpent samples from these guys with a sampling kit equipped.
