Alright, this technique didn't block shit for etheric attacks. What's up??? (Special thanks to The Fop - I got this for you and Cank, dammit!)

Your eyes glow with a brilliant green light, piercing The Fop for 42 damage.
The Fop makes a beckoning gesture at you. Spiders pour out of you, tearing wounds and biting you for 58 damage.

Your eyes glow with a brilliant green light, piercing The Fop for 39 damage.
The Fop rakes his fingers through the air. Arcs of green light match their movements, crashing into you for 46 damage.

Your eyes glow with a brilliant green light, piercing The Fop for 29 damage.
Waves of rasping teeth roll over you, tearing into you for 48 damage.

Your eyes glow with a brilliant green light, piercing The Fop for 46 damage.
The Fop whispers a strange invocation, more prayer than attack. Nevertheless, green flame pours out of you, dealing 68 damage.

Speculation: did ou have the mask/cloak equipped?
Maybe it depends on relative powers/defenses/stats?

Hmm. I did not have either equipped, and I'm pretty sure The Fop has higher stats than me. I'll test those things tonight!

My current stats are as follows:

Perception: 95
Reflexes: 85
Strength: 79
Will: 114

Etheric Power: 35

Maybe give or take a few points, as it depends on whether I have any buffs on at the time.

I will resist the temptation to be a dick and switch to an non-etheric outfit/deck tonight. :-p

Neither the mask, cloak or mask and cloak makes this technique block etheric attacks. Stats or more bird suit?

I have gotten both the brilliant and the overwhelming messages against the same person in gang warfare, albeit in different fights. I had the same stuff equipped. I have gotten both messages in the first pass, so it's probably not position dependent, or dependent on an opponent's technique. My current combat log has a 3:14 briliant:overwhelming ratio, so it's not that frequent a message.

I note that all the times I failed to block The Fop's attacks I had gotten the brilliant message instead of the overwhelming one, so I'm assuming that your attack needs to be "overwhelming" in order to block. Since I've gotten the overwhelming and brilliant messages with the same equipment, I guess that it probably depends on the opponent, possibly a relative stats comparison like xKiv speculated.

Confirmed that it's the overwhelming message that lets this technique block etheric attacks; I got a block with the overwhelming message using the exact same equipment I had on before.
