Alright, I seriously have no idea what the conditions to get a sword might be. I just got one, having reinstalled the mirror and ran the hermit through for 2 shards as my only action for today. Here are my stats:

By way of xerf, and I seem to be able to replicate it pretty consistently: challenge the hermit without a sword equipped. You can then successfully pull the sword out once.

Though now I'm curious how you're getting two shards from the hermit.

That's awesome. And the two shards at once is easy: a) have gotten no shards from the hermit already that day and b) end the fight with a parry->run him through or jab-> run him through chain once he starts laughing. To do this, you have to do the parry or the jab as an action when he isn't laughing, and then immediately run him through on the next round when he is laughing. You get a slightly different fight ending message too.

So when trying to climb it you can't because it says you need a pile of something to stand on like sand. Then in winter you have a pile of snow and can climb it. In winter with a torch you can try and burn it but can't because it drops snow on you, has anyone with a reflected torch seen if there's an option to burn it in another season without snow self defense?
