I'm not sure what triggered the special message and the technique learning. I had many, many effect running from buffing up to fight the Ocean King, so it's hard to isolate the cause. For what it's worth, I had a sword-type weapon (twisting silver blade) equipped and was using Clashing Blow, which would be my guess if I were forced to make one about what the trigger is.

After combat against a drunk lasting one round, I also got the special message plus technique learning. I'll put down everything that can potentially be relevant.

Perception: 9 (15)

You lead with a strong jab for 13 damage.
Kidney punches aren't quite as effective from the front, but the drunk gives it the old college try and deals 3 damage to you.

You slam into the drunk and deal 13 damage before he can fend off the attack.
he drunk waits until the last moment, then leaps into you, dealing 2 damage.

Nothing special with Implied Blade (Etheric opener, with and without sword hilt), Blade of Frost (with blade of the snows and Etheric), Vine Lash (Etheric), and Dancing blade.
