An interesting message appears sometimes when you don't do anything in combat:

As you stand motionless, the serpent sways back and forth, as though it's unsure of what to do.

This doesn't occur when fighting lake serpents or terrible serpents.

Cool find! That seems to be a message from when Stone Volley is unopposed. And since Stone Volley only appears as the first move in a chain, it'll only show up if you don't do anything. (Makes sense since the Volley move starts with "As you move…")

Nothing special for killing it with scaled pants, scaled gang jacket, shield of scales, serpent knuckles equipped, and using serpent pattern, shield of scales, sudden bash and serpent strike in a 4-chain.
