So, a few observations from my first time fighting it. When it drops you to the floor hard I don't think it counts as a separate tech as much as the result of it dragging you off your feet as it dropped me after I killed it. Just a sort of end of round thing like dynamite. Also the spores caused my wild kick to leave me off balance even though it didn't evade any damage as far as I could tell.

Are you sure you need a mushroom spade to get the fungal tendrils, given there's no special message? Although you're presumably correct assuming Al didn't find any tendrils during all that spading.

I don't understand how I could be the only person to get this drop off the Writhing Fungus if the mushroom spade isn't the determining factor. 2 out of every 3 fights I get fungal tendrils. That's a high drop rate. Perhaps it's just my high perception obscuring things, but I had thought quite a number of people have looked into this content. Now, would all the people who would enter into the wiki an opponent's drops or at least mention it in chat have never acquired it? Really?
The only possibility I could think of is that people who have acquired fungal tendrils without the aid of the mushroom spade simply did not now it hasn't yet been documented on the wiki. And fungal tendrils not being all that much of an enticing item would mean they would not bother to check up on it either or mention it in chat. But, still, I'm confident that mushroom spade is the trigger.
I would sooner doubt the need for the Myers Sampling Kit for the avian boss drops of the Feathered Cloak than I would for this. Do mind, those do not have a special message either.
Good find! On a similar idea, there doesn't seem to be anything special for killing mushroom scouts with the spade equipped.
(By the way, how did you calculate the Melee Defense you posted? This guy has at least some Reactive.)
