I finally got one of these. It's probably just a coincidence, but I got it in a fight where I avoided all of the damage from its "volley of stones" attack. Maybe if the stones lodge in your body they're not good for collecting?

I was not Etheric. I did have a Myers sampling kit equipped. I did not have any mining-related gear equipped other than the scuffed mining helmet.

All the gory details

You dive away from the serpent, all but vanishing in the writhing material of your cape.
As you move, the serpent snaps its head to face you and spits a volley of stones, dealing you 15 damage, but you slip past all of the damage.

You lay into the serpent for 15 damage, but the stone absorbs all of the damage.
The serpent melts into the stone.

You punch the serpent, throwing the whole weight of your body behind it and dealing 17 damage.

You hammer the serpent unrelentingly, dealing 28 damage.

You've won the battle!

You found: tear of the earth

You've earned 1 XP in Perception
You've gained Perception!

You've earned 1 XP in Reflexes

You've earned 2 XP in Strength

You've earned 2 XP in Will

EDIT: Slipped past all the volley of stones damage again and didn't get a drop, so if there's anything at all to this theory, it's not the whole story.

Tested all except broken injector, midgard player, powered injector, sludge heart, unlocked midgard player.

I thought it might only drop the tear if it was in stone form when you kill it, but that is not the case. Might just be a rare drop – how many times have you tried? I got 2/7 with ~35-40 perception.

You managed to get 2 in only 7 battles? Damn your lucky. I have 128 perception, have lost count of how many times if fought the serpent, and only managed to get two.

Odd. Not sure what the drop condition would be; I noted that it dropped when I went down to 9hp, but getting similarly low (and taking similarly large amounts of damage) didn't guarantee a drop on subsequent fights. (And that doesn't make much sense anyway).

I'm more like 2/10 now if it's any consolation. :P

No, I don't think you need anything, it just seems really rare.

Kinak considers a rare drop at ~3% or low. He doesn't think this qualifies but it's possible it's a 5-10% chance.
