Costs 36 energy to craft and 5 more to fight each of the jars, along with the following:

Damp Seaweed x5
Mutant Cell Sample x5
Ghoul Teeth x5
Larval Acid x5
Toxic Oil x6
Ghoul Protein
Shivering Capacitors
Spider Ash

(Just FYI)

((damp seaweed = agar powder) + (mutant cell sample + (withered tendrils = toxic oil) = Virulent Cell Sample) = virulent cell culture) + (ghoul teeth + larval acid = nightmare fuel) = warring samples

Protip: you can get more than one spider ash from analyzing a sample of stone spider chitin, so do them one by one if you don't want to wind up with extra ash.

Surely it's easier to use a twisted cell culture than warring samples if you're going for Lord of Nightmares?

fighting to a draw doesn't seem to count as opening a jar, neither for skill accumulation nor # of enemies in further jars.

Ah, I finally parsed this sentence right - now I understand what you're asking Vholes. You can "use" the twisted cell culture to start a fight (ie. press the 'use" button), but doing so is not required to get either skill. You can't use the twisted cell culture in place of the other one.

I used 2 gold cultures today (won), then I used a spider culture and got 3 spiders. That seems inconsistent with how we know this to work.

On the plus side, running away from 5 different nightmares-in-a-jar in a single day gave me a skill! On the disappointing side, that skill was Slave to Nightmares.
