I've spent 7 days' worth of energy in the Dockside Sewers & Gang Warfare, with a scuffed mining helmet, mining pick, mining shirt, and mining pants equipped, and at least 1 Mining Strike in my deck at all times (sometimes Dynamite as well, which is thematically appropriate though mechanically irrelevant to this content). While I have left the mine maybe half a dozen times (some without thinking, some to test exactly how moving between mine zones† works), I always reentered it immediately. I've killed several serpents, several miners, and a couple writhing fungi, found every result on every choice encounter (besides some Walk Aways & the two that require unequipping the mining pick), and "completed" the zone 6 times with Collapsing Tunnel.

This is all to document my search for a mining avatar. Now I'm going to get those last two results (attempting to dig without a pick & fishing with a fishing pole), assume I've demonstrated my mining encounter dedication enough, and just try to fight more PvP fights in this outfit with 4xMining Strike. Between Impressively Increased Mining Encounters and restricting myself to the only underground gang warfare zone, 7 days of energy represents many fewer fights than it would for most avatar searches, so I'm willing to keep at this for a little longer.

Thank you Barton26 for our mutually assured immolation.

(Also, as a miner note, leaving the zone or even spending a turn without the mining helmet does not reset your progress in tunnel-digging.)

There is another item and technique to get with the Scuffed Mining Helmet content. Maybe you should look into finding those before getting into the Avatar spading.
