Reminder: Remember to try sending the hunter into the Swirling Portal this Halloween, provided that the portal shows up again.
I think the base damage of this technique needs another examination.
You open your tome and whisper a few words. A shadowy shape descends from the sky, guided by diffuse green light to maul the guard for 32 damage.
The guard punches you, throwing the whole weight of his body behind it and dealing 3 damage, but the shadowy shape interferes with his attack, preventing all of the damage.
My Etheric Power: -2
Security's Etheric Defense: -2
No special effects active other than Jade Protection. Now, from what I understand of the combat system, I should have done a max of 20 damage against this guard if it's base damage was really 10. As evidenced above, I did significantly more than that.
Yeah, your math looks right Arkaim, I would concur. Base would have to be 16-32 with that data.
No change following Starry Gaze, in tome form unopposed.
No change the other way around either (Winged –> Gaze), this time with attack blocked as well.
In the beginning, men were mortal.
Is this any different indoors? (EDIT 7 years later: does not seem to.)
I don't know what happened here, never seen this:
You open your tome and prepare to speak. However, a faceless beast hurls itself downward from the sky, its wings still stiff with ice, and mauls acidcat for 79 etheric damage.
(29 EP, vs. acidcat who obviously had a lot of etheric defense because I was normally doing very little damage; 4th pass unopposed; acidcat only had one pass with focused burst (chain 5))
(my chain was spider/firebird (low FP version)/microcket/hunter; I might have summoned all 3 hounds earlier)
ETA: on the quad
…
It happened again, this time in round one.
me: hound/spider/firebird/microcket/hunter
acidcat: indirect fire/full auto
Very cool. Did you have the jade amulet equipped, and maybe close to the point where the hunter would come steal your amulet?
No amulet equipped (I think I had numbing IV by that point; earlier I was charging blood rose amulet). The text kinda looks like maybe stellar appreciation makes the star appreciate me by throwing their servants at my enemies?
(note: I was sober the entire time, I don't waste eclipse on tome-ic fights)
ETA: on defense, against Koshy, I got the normal "You whisper a few words from your book and a shadowy shape responds, gliding down on membranous wings to slash at Koshy for 20 etheric damage."
koshy: withering gaze, call the swarm, evil eye
me: hound, spider, firebird, microcket, hunter
so it's not unopposed or closer or just my skills
maybe distance?
Poking around the summoning techniques, I note there are four forms the Jade effect: Jade Cage/Jade Charm/Jade Protection/Jade Whisper — I bet these have not all been tested exhaustively. I wonder if the "a faceless beast hurls itself downward from the sky" version is for one of the other effects?
Of minor note, this form was seen with Fae Sight. I subconsciously associate horns with Ocean Sight (but also underwater generally I suppose) but since my personal etheric-state seems inconsequential to the use of the tech, it probably indicates there is a connection between a distant ocean horn and the hunter.
You open your tome and whisper a few words. A horn sounds in the distance and a shadowy shape cuts through the water to maul <opponent> for <X> damage.
<Opponent attacks>, but the shadowy shape interferes with its attack, preventing but <X> / of the of the damage.
