With 75 energy of Dark Smoke, 5 Eclipse duration, I took 1 (normal) Eclipse and got:

You swallow the Eclipse. It pulsates its way down your throat. Ugh.

After a moment, though, you see things differently.

The pain in your chest subsides a little.
You learned a new Technique: Smoke Talons

You've gained 20 energy of Ocean Sight.
You learned a new Technique: Watch Winding

(I now have 65 energy of Dark Smoke and a whole lot of Broken Bone, which is probably from something else that I didn't notice before)

Your eclipse duration should have given you 10 energy of Ocean sight… something else at work here?

I lost 10 energy of Dark Smoke, so it looks like 10 from the Eclipse (5+5) and 10 from the smoke.

I cleaned up spading notes on page, but we still don't have a precise number on how much you need to convert for the technique:

New data:

Starting dark Smoke	Amount converted	Total etheric gained after conversion	# Techs
10	7	14	-
3	3	10	-
28	28	97	2

Super lazy theory: multiples of 10.

Old data from page suggests other factors though:

Ocean Sight, 70 Dark Smoke, +5 ed
both talons equipped, took one eclipse, got smoke talons
no talons equipped, took one eclipse, no tech

Possible factors: talons reduces requirement, random factor, becomes harder per day, duration of remaining smoke matters.

Not combining data because iirc the dark smoke attack mechanic changed, so it's possible this formula changed as well.
