I got the 3 twisted hounds encounter from my first turn in the pit. So I guess there may not be a special condition for this encounter?
Unless the special condition is that we are collectively digging deeper. I expect we'll find more creepier stuff the further this goes.
(I spent 50+ turns etheric without ever getting the 3 hound encounter, and then all of a sudden it started showing up all the time.)
Despite having the same image and name, the crazy Slags Guards that started attacking me are NOT the same as the regular ones.
Some combat logs:
These are not all from the same combats. I didn't track the 'you win' messages at first, until I realized these guys were granting no XP.
You snap at the guard like a muzzled beast, ramming your headgear into him for 12 damage.

You slam into the guard and deal 13 damage before he can fend off the attack.
The guard fires a stream of needles into you, dealing 9 damage.
The guard fires a single needle at you. It twitches and writhes its way into your flesh, dealing 24 damage.

Edit: Looks like the drops and XP are fixed now. In addition to the normal Slags Guard drops, it looks like these guys can drop the infested containment suit parts. Just got an infested containment helmet from one.
Looks like the infested guards have a couple of new techniques:
I think this one is Etheric:
The guard goes limp as the spiders pour out of his containment suit. Once freed, they swarm over you for 30 damage.
You punch the guard, throwing the whole weight of your body behind it and dealing 17 damage, but the guard's body limply absorbs all but 10 damage.
EDIT: Barton26 reports the guards absorbing melee when they go limp.
Regular and unopposed versions of the same tech?
The guard fires a single needle at you. It arcs towards you, dealing 3 damage.
The guard fires a single needle at you. It twitches and writhes its way into your flesh, dealing 16 damage.
I think the second of these is Etheric, if used on the round following the first one
The guard snarls animalistically at you.
The guard throws his head back and howls. The sound shakes you to your bones for 1 damage.
The guard fires a single needle at you. It seeks you out and burrows into your flesh, dealing 14 damage.
This was opposed (by etheric). I saw "twitches and writhes" the next round, unopposed.
And yet another one effect:
You open your third eye, bathing the area in golden light.
The guard fires a single needle at you. It seeks you out and burrows into your flesh, dealing 16 damage. The attack came from an unexpected angle, avoiding your defense.
In the beginning, men were mortal.
So new holograms out now. The shark doesn't seem to have an unlock (aside from more digging), but the Rag Man seems to need Matsuo to show up. (At least - he didn't show up for me in ~30 turns, and the start fight text implies that too.) Looking at the possible triggers for the other holograms:
Amorphous hologram (aka Herald)
Skull hologram
Spider hologram
Writhing hologram (tentacles)
The Herald one might unlock just by digging deeper since she's kind of the boss. Maybe could try a spider nest, numbing/smoldering skull, etc. Any ideas for writhing masses?
EDIT: Argeth tested laser and they do work. He also suggested writhing flesh or spider venom if you need a laser offhand?
The last shreds of its energy desperately try to flow back up your laser's path. A strange notification pops up on your comm. You found: shark hologram
Also suggests that the Shark might be unlocked with Primeval Terror, and since we all have hundreds of turns of that, it's showing up without a trigger. Anyone didn't spend too long in the party and can test?
So, I'm not sure if this is bugged, or I really missed something. I thought I was in the encounter with the rescue team, and went to wave the guard off. Then I got this:
![]()
She snickers, then laughs, then doubles over.
"No, no, definitely not. Ha."
"I'll keep this between us and neither of us will end up chained to the floor of Lake Metroplex to keep the fish company, deal?"
She wanders off, still chuckling to herself.
It was definitely a slags guard image before, and looked like the rescue team encounter, at least with the brief look I gave it.
Considering the 1024 or so possible outcomes of halloween last year, I'm not surprised if it was never found… :)
