Archiving a screen shot of the old hacking system, just in case someone is curious about it in a few years from now:
There doesn't seem to be a section for generalized hacking text. This one is the text that let's you know it is a maddening site.
Maddening bursts of static echo from your computer's speakers, accompanied by strange hitches and stutters in the visual. Tangled streams of data spasm, merge, and separate in time with the echoing static.
This is the one for maddening sites that are a part of your network.
You recognize a few of the tangled streams as connecting back to your network. The rest are anyone's guess.
It's all on the Website Types page. It talks about how to identify sites both by type and also access level/infection/in a network/etc.
I think it got moved a few months ago (and perhaps not moved to the best location), but I guess since it's all going to be history soon anyway, it's okay there.
Can anyone send me some screenshots of what oldos hacking used to look like? I joined after the transition to novos and I've always been curious, but unable to create an account to ask!
Afraid I don't have any screenshots of what it used to look like, but essentially when you hacked into a system you got something that looked like a choice encounter. You'd have a number of options, one of which was generally Elevate Privileges. You could use that to enter net combat, and winning would unlock new choices from the base menu. And using those choices or doing stuff in net combat would raise the alert until you eventually got kicked off.
I think the results of some options could change depending on what software you had installed, but you just had to have it installed. Picking specific functions only came into play during the combat portion.
Hahaha, I did save exactly that…9 years ago. The links were broken in the first post of this thread but I fixed those now. Interesting to dig back into that system again.
Main website structure worked more-or-less like non-hacking choice encounters do now:
If you try to "Elevate Privileges", you enter a combat fight with one or more hacking opponents. Similar to regular combat except instead of making chains of techniques (eg. 4-5-6-7), you had a total Memory which you could use on tools (eg. here I had 11 memory so could use any combinations of tools that add up to 11 or less - the blue numbers on the tools represent memory use).

(Ignore the red text, that's just a script I was using to more easily spade alert values.)
