I tried getting beaten to hell against the 5 Ghoul encounter without using a single tech with this effect active and Severely Charred, mimicing that scene in the Black Sketchbook where the ghouls herded things into the firey pits and then fishing out their charred remains to eat. This doesn't appear to have triggered anything.
