I have tried many many things to get the enhanced version of this technique. Among the things I've tried are:

• opposing it with melee/fire/ranged/stealth/etheric
• using it while unopposed
• wearing the full mummy outfit from urban lore
• underground
• underwater
• above ground

The only "easy" things left to try are following it up with other techniques. But, nothing really looks all that appropriate.
Things that didn't work:

• withering gaze (Preceding and coming after)
