How does this work unopposed? If your opponent isn't doing anything does that cause you to fail, cause that seems weird.

I'm not 100% certain, but usually with techniques that care about distance it seems like you are treated as being at a favorable distance when unopposed. On the other hand, most of the ones I have experience of work best at short distance, so it's possible that's the default.

I did some spading on this a couple weeks back and it seems that mostly unopposed counts as a chain ~5 technique (so rockets work effectively), but then I found this post I made a while further back, which concluded that unopposed is a tricky matter, possibly depending on the opponent and the last technique that they used. Needs more spading to say the least.

That's working as intended. Try to back up from the math a bit and it'll probably start making sense.
