Uses

When used:

You don't have anything resembling the facilities to really dig into this sample. From what you can tell, though, they're basically human and multiply extremely quickly when given food.

You've earned 2 XP in Perception

Or with chemistry kit installed:

During your experiments you discover that the cells in this sample are contaminated with some shimmering oil.

Chemically, the oil appears largely inert. The cells themselves are a bit more active, multiplying until they exhaust their food then going dormant.

All in all, it's way more interesting than an ant farm, but you don't feel like you've gotten to the bottom of this.

You've earned 3 XP in Perception

Or with trauma reference equipped:

During your experiments you discover that the cells in this sample are contaminated with some shimmering oil.

The substance itself doesn't respond to normal chemical tests, but the cells show a number of interesting properties. As long as the individual cells remain intact, they seem content to multiply indefinitely.

Something about the cells look awfully familiar, so you pull out your trusty trauma reference. You don't find the tests you remember… watching? Performing?

You do find a section in the reference that describes the cells, though: 'Invasive Cancer Caused By Etheric Intoxification.' Apparently the suggested treatment is immediate amputation of the infected area, followed by immersing the tissue in acid.

You've earned 5 XP in Perception

Or, while Etheric and Etheric Power >= 12

During your experiments you discover that the cells in this sample are contaminated with some shimmering oil.

Chemically the substance appears largely inert, but you eventually discover it responds to your thoughts. By thinking one way or another, you can make the tiny oil slicks move or even form unsettling shapes.

By the time you collapse, mentally exhausted, the cells have been ripped apart by your experimentation.

You've earned 2 XP in Perception

You've earned 2 XP in Will

History

Previous there was also a Chemistry recipe to combine this with powerful acid to gain 2 XP in Perception, once only (further attempts to combine this or the cell sample with acid would destroy both ingredients and consume energy, but result in no gain)
