Encounter Conditions

Halloween 2024

Initial Text

This stretch of office wall has been covered with a foam brick replacement, giving it a much better Halloween flair. It would probably feel a bit like a medieval castle without the bright office lights or a dungeon if things were properly dark.

Although it still has a ways to go in terms of realism, it already seems to shift and move the smallest amounts as though something is crawling behind it.

Choice Text and Results

Install an animatronic motor

You find a good place for an animatronic motor, shaking the bricks slightly as though something is moving behind them. It's just about perfect. That should add nicely to the tension regardless of what else is going on.

You've earned 4 XP in Perception

Add more foam brick wall

You extend one end of the wall with a creation of your own, carefully picking out a place where it'll join in neatly with the existing wall.

You've earned 10 XP in Perception

Spread a spider web

You find a good place to spread some web across the wall. Whether or not it's an actual theme, it makes the wall look more authentic and it's hard to go wrong with spiders on Halloween.

You've earned 4 XP in Perception

Weave in artificial ivy

Rather than just draping the vines over, you pry at weak spaces among the bricks to get it properly fixed here and there. It looks pretty natural weaving over the wall's surface.

You've earned 4 XP in Strength

Examine the wall

You stare into the gaps between the bricks, eventually convincing yourself that there's nothing behind them but the wall of the actual office. Still, the illusion is quite convincing… something to do with the light coming through the covered windows, perhaps.

Or, after seeing the centipede?:

You stare into the gaps between the bricks, looking for the creature moving beyond them. Although you can't see anything in the darkness beyond the wall, faint scratches of metal against stone do reach your ears.

Or, if etheric:

The bricks tremble slightly as you watch, drawing your gaze to the cracks that momentarily open from the movement. A barely recognizable reflection stares back through the wall, a beautiful face without any hint of shame or doubt.

As the wall shifts again, you see the face move, revealing a hollow mask and the many-legged creature offering it up to your sight.

Scuff the bricks

A little damage adds a lot of character to the bricks, you just have to be careful or they'll break enough to reveal the foam underneath. By finding a couple good places, you make the whole thing look a bit less like foam.

You've earned 2 XP in Perception

Leave it be

The wall seems likely to remain standing on its own.
