Subversion Testing

Note: This page documents how the Subversion Testing worked; this was a system that existed from about 2011 to 2016. See [Backbone Control] for the current version of the Golden Chip's Front Row.

Subversion Testing was a leaderboard for the largest networks on the net. It was formed as a result of the Virus Event 2011 by The Golden Chip members.

Access

The Subversion Testing was accessed by using a front row ticket, from The Golden Chip for 250 tickets. This unlocks the ability to buy relay code from the Golden Chip as well. Further uses of front row tickets give large amounts of relay codes.

Increasing your rank

If you hack a site to full control and have a relay code in your inventory, you have the option to apply the relay code to the site. This increases your rank by the site's signal strength (which is equal to how many levels the site has - from one to six) on the leaderboards. If the site was previously uncontrolled, you gain the site's level in XP; otherwise you take the site from the opposing player (and the opposing player loses all access to the site, and loses the site from bookmarks, but the site retains its alert level with respect to this player and is tagged as Subverted when regained in bookmarks, until lost by normal means; exception: having hubs in your net saves links to sites you lost via relaying, so you don't lose them from bookmarks (but still lose access)).

If you lose access to a site by being kicked off, you still retain its points for the leaderboard. If someone scrubs a site you control, you lose the points. If you are in a gang, any points you gain personally also contribute to the gang's total, but only count if you were in that gang at the start of the day.

There are several programs that rely on having a large network to function. These include:

Messages

The following messages appeared at the top of the leaderboards:

Initial rollout messages

Current messages

The subversion testing page displays an announcement every day, in two parts. The first tells who had the biggest gains yesterday:

Very small amount of signal (1-22-?)

Heard some good activity from <player's> corner last night. That's x new signal.

Somewhat small amount of signal (?-26-50)

Heard some good activity from <player's> corner last night. That's 50 new signal. We're hearing it five by five.

Small amount of signal (51-98-?)

Heard some good activity from <player's> corner last night. That's x new signal. Better watch out.

Medium amount of signal(?-102-177-?)

Heard some good activity from <player's> corner last night. That's x new signal. We're hearing it loud and clear.

Large amount of signal (?-201-1318-?)

Heard some good activity from <player's> corner last night. That's x new signal. My only regret is that I have but one BANG! cola to give for yesterday's Subversion Tuning.

If the person who would have won reset that day or no one did any subverting

Didn't get a good signal last night through all the static. Let's hear it five by five!

The second paragraph reflects how far along this round of testing is:

System Message: We're starting a new batch of cores. If you're interested in tuning them, take on some sites.

or

We're making progress on this new batch of cores.

or

The new batch is humming along nicely. Let's say… 25%

or

The tuning for our new comm cores is coming along nicely, but we've still got some work ahead of us.

or

System Message: Alright, we're over halfway with this new batch. They're talking to us, now they just need to talk to each other.

or

Alright, this update isn't as exciting as being halfway done, but, well, it's the update after being halfway done. Can't complain about that.

or

System Message: They're talking to each other! Now we just need to get the last couple bugs out.

or

System Message: You see that line there? That's the finish line. I bet we can get there tonight.

Rewards

In return for adding sites to your network, the Golden Chip will hand out rewards every day. These rewards will depend on how many sites you added to your network. If you add more than 50 signal and you add the most signal for the day, you will get this message:

You've made incredible strides today, bringing 50≥ signal online for the tuning. There's a little sign of our appreciation attached to this message and another in the OmniMall. Keep up the good work.

You found: Network Integrator

And in the Omnimall:

From OmniMall Customer Service:

It appears the following package was left as a gift for you, but temporarily misplaced due to computer error. We apologize for any inconvenience.

You found: BANG! Cola

If you add more than 50? signal but you don't add the most signal that day, you will get this message:

From: GTST (System)
Sent: YEAR-MONTH-DAY 00:00:SECONDS
You made serious strides today, subverting <x> signal for our tuning. That's not quite <the most someone added>, but we got you something anyway.

Keep up the good work!

You found: <10-14> golden tickets

If you add more than 50? signal and tie for the most signal gained that day, you will get this message:

You made serious strides today, subverting <x> signal for our tuning. You technically tied for first, so we got you something anyway.

If you add 50 or less signal and you add the most signal that day:

From: GTST (System)
Sent: YEAR-MONTH-DAY 00:00:SECONDS
You've made great strides today, bringing 50≤ signal online for the tuning. There's a little sign of our appreciation at OmniMall. Keep up the good work.
