Toad Statue

Item

Image toadstatue.jpg
Description Molded from some strange ceramic, this type of statue is rumored to give good luck. Actually, they say that the statue saves good luck for a rainy day, which is a bit harder to parse, so it usually gets chopped down to "lucky."

Anyway, it's too large even to bash peoples' heads in with it, but it would probably look nice in your apartment.
Type Furniture
Use You set up the statue on a little table right inside your door. It's a nice touch and, in the right light, might scare away some burglars.
Effect Puts a Smiling Toad Statue in your apartment.

Uses

While installed in your Housing, the toad can grant you various Smiling effects. You can get these either by using it from your housing (rubbing its belly) or by making "lucky" chains in combat. These effect are:

Effect Bonuses
Smiling Brawler +2 Melee Power, +2 Evasion Power with Eclipse
Smiling Shooter +2 Ranged Power, +2 Evasion Power with Eclipse
Smiling Pyro +2 Fire Power, +2 Evasion Power with Eclipse
Smiling Sneak +2 Stealth Power, +2 Evasion Power with Eclipse
Smiling Artist +2 Etheric Power, +2 Evasion Power with Eclipse

When you gain a Smiling effect, its duration is 10 + N Energy, where "N" is your Smiling effect duration bonus (see below).

Removing the toad statue from your housing will remove all energy of Smiling effects, and reinstalling it will NOT restore them or provide any additional rubs. Owning multiple toads does not seem to provide any additional benefits.

Lucky Chains

A lucky chain is a chain of five consecutive techniques used in a single combat round. Making a lucky chain with a toad statue installed in your Housing will either give you a Smiling effect, charge the toad, or supercharge the toad. In some circumstances (trigger currently unknown) the toad will treat four-technique-long chains as lucky as well.

Gaining Smiling Effects

Each day, if you rub the toad's belly without a Smiling effect active, you get one free use that does not require or use up any toad charges. If you use the toad with a Smiling effect active, you don't get your free use for the day. Further belly rubs require charges.

Which Smiling effect you get is always randomly chosen. However, if you rub the toad's belly when you have a Smiling effect already active (and you have charges available), you will convert all energy of it to a different randomly chosen Smiling effect and gain an additional [10+N] energy.

You can also gain a Smiling effect if do not have one active and make a lucky chain. This does not require or use a charge.

Charging the Toad

When you first install the toad, it has no charges. You can add a charge to the toad by making a lucky chain in combat while you have a Smiling effect active. This will add a charge to the toad instead of giving you a new Smiling effect or extending your existing one.

The toad can hold a maximum of five charges. You can see how many charges your toad has by looking at it in your Housing (see below). Each charge lets you rub the toad's belly an additional time. Charges persist across rollovers; they do not reset to zero each day.

Making a lucky chain when your toad is at maximum charges gives a special message and may "supercharge" it, but the exact mechanics of this are still being spaded.

Smiling Effect Duration

The base duration of Smiling effects is 10. You can increase this by supercharging the toad. This seems to have something to do with making lucky chains when the toad is already at maximum charges, but the precise mechanics are still being spaded. Each time you successfully supercharge the toad, you add one to the duration of any Smiling effect you gain.

While you are in a beta reset run, any bonus Smiling effect duration you accrued in previous incarnations is ignored. However, when you finish your run, bonus duration from previous incarnations does seem to count. (It is unknown whether you can supercharge your toad in-run, and if you can whether this bonus duration is added to that from previous incarnations when your run is over.)

Messages

Using a smiling toad statue installed in your Housing gives:

smilingtoadtable.jpg

0 charges:

The statue sits near your front door, staring at you passively.

1 charge:

The statue sits near your front door, smiling at you.

2 charge:

The statue sits near your front door, smiling at you warmly.

3 charges:

The statue sits near your front door, smiling at you warmly.

Is today your lucky day?

4 charges:

The statue sits near your front door, grinning at you warmly.

It seems friendly somehow. Maybe this luck thing isn't all bogus.

And then:

Rub its stomach

You rub the toad's stomach asking for new luck to start out your day on the right foot. Whether it's lucky or not, it puts a smile on your face.

You've gained 10 energy of <Smiling effect>.

Or, if you already have an effect active and no charges:

Rubbing the toad's stomach doesn't seem to do much, which is probably fine because you're feeling pretty lucky already.

Or, if you already have an effect active and some extra charges:

You rub the toad's stomach asking for different luck. You're not sure if it's the toad or you, but you're feeling a bit different… maybe even lucky.

You've gained <X+10+N> energy of <different Smiling effect>.
(X = amount of energy of old buff, and lose the old buff, N = number of times supercharged)

Or, if you have no effect active and do have extra charges:

You rub the toad's stomach asking for better luck. It's hard to say if you're any luckier, but it puts a smile on your face.

You've gained [10+N] energy of <Smiling effect>.

Or, if you used the toad already and have no charges:

You rub the toad's stomach. It doesn't feel particularly lucky… more just like porcelain.

Combat Messages

If you have a toad statue installed in your Housing and make a lucky chain in combat, one of the following messages is added to the combat results at the end of the fight.

If you don't have any Smiling effect active:

First time each day:

You're feeling pretty lucky. It might just be that crazy toad statue.

You've gained [10+N] energy of <Smiling effect>.

Subsequent times:

You feel lucky! Maybe the toad statue's still rubbing off on you.

You've gained [10+N] energy of <Smiling effect>.

If you do have a Smiling effect active (adds one happiness charge):

Before having rubbed the toad's belly each day, or if you've used it once today and was not fully charged (?):

You're feeling pretty lucky today. It's probably that crazy toad statue back at your place.

Subsequent times:

You feel lucky today! It's gotta be the toad!

At max (5) charges:

You feel absurdly lucky. Maybe it's time to let that spread around a bit.
