Using The Midgard Player

This page documents what happens happens when you click the Use the Midgard Player, and how to get the various music effects from it.

The unlocked Midgard Player, monitored Midgard Player and gold Midgard Player function the same as the base form (except where indicated).

Effects

Feeding data to a Player will give you turns of a music effect —results vary depending on what kind of music, if any, you already have active. In all cases, the data/programs you feed to a Player will be consumed. Feeding data to a gold Midgard Player will yield a 50% bonus to the duration of the effect gained.

Some of the effects you get are randomized per beta reset, but will remain consistent day-to-day for the duration of that run. Additionally, feeding it any program that uses Fractal Code will re-randomize the player (see below).

Terminology

There are 6 different harmonies (and corresponding seeds) which all start with the letter 'S'. These are random, so we will call them SH1 through SH6 (and corresponding SS1 through SS6). You will have to do a bit of experimenting to figure out exactly which one is which for your particular character. The 6 S___ words are Sniper, Shrieking, Suspicious, Static, Suspenseful and Stalking.

  • For example: If the Sniper Harmony works out to be SH1 in the charts below, SH1 will always be Sniper Harmony, and SS1 will always be Sniper Seed (for this reset).
Additional terminology note: The Midgard Player came out before the Novos hacking revamp. A couple years later, a lot of the data/programs were phased out and new Novos data is used instead (although the old stuff continues to work). So instead of saying "feed an automation routine or command script or any complex code that uses an automation routine in the recipe", it's just going to be written as "type D" data. These arbitrary designations are as follows (this is not randomized):
Type Data
A networking code or networking functions
B math subroutine or crash script
C file interface or search script
D automation routine or command script
E language interpreter, Novos functionality updates or Novos system updates
F security patches or filtering script

Also note: Orderly Code (pre-Novos) is equivalent to Secured Transmission Functions (Novos). Midgard Internal Code (pre-Novos) is equivalent to Spectrum Transmission Functions (Novos).

Last note: In tables below there are several abbreviations for results, listed here (for full text, see Messages From The Midgard Player.

Shorthand Message Result
"ex" "weaving in existing" Adds to turns of current music. Normally +10 turns, or +15 with gold player, or more for "complex" code
"pro" "chitters in protest" Lose all turns of music playing, and gain 10 (or 15) of one of the four base seeds (Hurried/Metered/Ponderous/Uneven)
"fb" "shrieking feedback" Lose all turns of music playing, and gain 10 (or 15) of one of the four base seeds (Hurried/Metered/Ponderous/Uneven)
"weaving in existing" Any other result listed gives the "weaving in existing" message but upgrades your music to a new type. You get the number of turns of the old music you had plus 10 (or 15)

Seeding Fractal Code

When feeding any program/data that uses Fractal Code, it will re-randomize the distribution of the S___ Harmonies and Seeds.

Additionally, if you have the unlocked-, monitored- or gold Midgard Player, it will reset it to the original form. Kinak says this is due to product design.
